Waikiki – The Royal Hawaiian stands as one of the most recognizable landmarks along Honolulu’s famous shoreline. Built in 1927 in a distinctive Spanish-Moorish style, the hotel known as the Pink Palace of the Pacific will mark its centennial in February 2027. A comprehensive renovation is now underway to refresh the property while preserving its signature character, and the work is scheduled for completion in time for the milestone. ([1])
Iconic Presence on a Prime Stretch of Beach
The Royal Hawaiian opened as one of the first major resorts in Waikiki, following the earlier Moana Surfrider by more than two decades. Its pink stucco exterior quickly became a visual signature that has drawn generations of visitors to the oceanfront location. The six-story historic wing contains 349 rooms and suites, many featuring tall ceilings and spacious layouts that reflect the era of its construction. The hotel has remained a steady presence even as surrounding development changed the Waikiki skyline. Its location on a prime stretch of beach continues to set it apart for travelers seeking a blend of history and convenience.
Staged Updates Keep the Property Open
Renovation work is proceeding in phases so that guests can continue to stay at the hotel. Sections close temporarily while others remain available, allowing operations to continue without a full shutdown. The famous pink exterior will stay intact, with no plans to alter the stucco that defines the building’s appearance. Rooms in the historic wing will receive new custom-carved furniture, dining tables, and updated bathrooms featuring glass shower doors and refreshed vanities. The design draws on the golden age of travel, incorporating elements reminiscent of vintage steamer trunks and elegant lines that echo the building’s architecture. Original wooden doors carved with the Hawaii state seal are being retained as a nod to the property’s heritage. The adjacent Mailani Tower, added in 1969, is also receiving a complete overhaul. All 179 rooms there, including 11 suites, will be redone, and each offers ocean views along with a private lanai.
Public Spaces and New Experiences
Lobby and common areas are slated for lighter fabrics and updated furnishings to create a brighter atmosphere. A Historic Gallery opened recently in partnership with Matson Archives, displaying artifacts from the 1920s and the hotel’s grand opening. Twice-weekly tours now guide visitors through the collection. The centennial will feature several commemorative events, including a special Royal Hawaiian Ahaaina Luau, the opening of a time capsule, and a series of parties. Tickets for these gatherings go on sale October 21. “This once-in-a-generation milestone offers an opportunity to celebrate the Pink Palace of the Pacific’s extraordinary heritage, honor the cherished stories that have shaped its remarkable history, and create new memories that will inspire future generations for years to come,” said Nicole Okuna, the resort’s general manager. The refreshed Royal Hawaiian is expected to welcome guests with renewed interiors when the birthday celebrations begin early next year.
