The title is a little sneakier than it sounds, and that’s the good news. No major hotel chain publishes a rule saying that turning 65 erases a fee. Yet front desks waive, trim and quietly skip charges every day for guests who ask early and ask nicely.
So which line items actually move? Some are a few dollars. Others quietly outweigh the senior discount itself. And the charge at #1 is the one most travelers assume is carved in stone.
#17 – The Early Check-In Fee Nobody Mentioned at Booking
Standard check-in is typically 3:00 or 4:00 PM, with checkout at 11:00 AM. Picture stepping off a red-eye at 9 a.m., carry-on in hand, only to hear the room costs extra to enter before lunch. Some hotels structure that fee as a percentage of the nightly rate.
It’s also one of the softer charges on a bill. Many hotels are willing to waive or reduce it, especially for frequent guests or special occasions. Tell them your arrival time when you book, not when you show up at the desk, so they can flag a room before the housekeeping schedule is set.
The next charge is the flip side of this one, and hotels treat it even more flexibly.
#16 – The Late Checkout Charge That Hotels Often Hand Out Free
Some hotels charge extra to keep your room past 11 a.m. Others bill a half day. Yet complimentary late checkout is common during low-occupancy periods, and front desk staff often have discretion to waive the fee.
That discretion is the whole game. An empty Tuesday in February gets a “yes” far more often than a sold-out holiday weekend. Ask at check-in rather than at the last minute, so the desk can plan around you.
Worth Knowing
- Standard checkout is typically 11 a.m., so anything later is a favor or a fee.
- Quiet, low-occupancy nights give you the best odds of a free extension.
- Even mid-tier loyalty status often comes with late checkout.
- Asking at check-in lets the desk plan housekeeping around you.
Next up is a charge many city hotels now treat as standard.
#15 – The City Parking Bill That Can Quietly Disappear
Free parking has become the exception at many hotels, particularly in cities. A nightly parking line can rival a decent dinner. Still, it’s not set in stone.
One travel guide says a sympathetic front desk clerk is usually empowered to waive parking charges to keep a guest happy. Parking is also among the optional charges that don’t have to appear in the advertised total price. That makes it one of the likeliest to show up as a surprise.
The charge at #14 is the one that most often gets swapped for a different perk.
#14 – The Premium Wi-Fi Upsell You Might Not Need
Basic Wi-Fi is often free now. A “premium” tier can still add a daily charge. Like parking, Wi-Fi upgrades and early check-in are optional charges that don’t have to be in the advertised total.
Ask what the free tier covers before you pay for an upgrade. Email, maps and video calls with the grandkids often run fine on it. Even mid-tier loyalty status often comes with Wi-Fi upgrades and late checkout, so joining the free loyalty program before you book can save you the charge.
Next is a fee that tends to show up only when the whole family travels together.
#13 – The Rollaway Bed Charge When Grandkids Join the Trip
Multigenerational trips are common, and so is the add-on bill. Rollaway beds and pet fees can pad your final total. A cot for one visiting grandchild can come with its own nightly line.
Mention it at booking, not at the counter. Some properties will include a rollaway at no charge or hand over an extra set of linens. Many hotels will simply offer a different room type if the extra bed fee is the sticking point, and the cheapest fix may be a room with two queens.
The next fee has a legal twist that surprises a lot of guests.
#12 – The Pet Fee That Doesn’t Apply to Every Animal
Pet fees are common, and they add up fast on a long stay. Many travelers don’t realize that service animals are treated differently from pets. Federal ADA rules generally bar hotels from charging a pet fee for a service dog, though hotels can still bill for actual damage.
Emotional support animals are not covered the same way, so policies vary. A fee that looks fixed on the listing may not apply to your situation at all. Raise it by phone before you arrive, and ask for the pet policy in writing.
Next is a tiny fee that tells you a lot about how hotels bill.
#11 – The Package Handling Fee on Your Mailed Medications
Mailing a box ahead is a smart move for a longer stay, whether it’s supplies, a spare supply of medication or a gift for the family. Some hotels charge a handling fee per box. It’s one of those small extras that can slip onto your bill without much notice.
Ask what the policy is before you ship anything. Some desks charge nothing for a single box. A quick call before you send it is the cheapest way to find out, and putting your name and check-in date on the label keeps the box from vanishing in a back office.
The next charge is one hotels almost never advertise.
#10 – The Pool Seat “Reservation” That Costs Extra
Some properties now charge for guaranteed pool seating. One travel guide flags reservation fees to grab the best seat by the pool as an extra guests can run into on arrival. For a quiet week in the sun, that’s a hard line to swallow.
Ask whether free seating is available early in the morning or late in the day. Many guests assume paid cabanas are the only way to get shade. They usually aren’t.
The next fee is where guests lose real money without noticing.
#9 – The Late Cancellation Penalty You Can Sidestep by Calling Early
Hotels can charge for late cancellations, no-shows or damage. A change of plans, like a health scare or a delayed flight, can cost you a full night’s rate. Plenty of guests simply accept it.
Call before the deadline, not after. A request made while the room can still be resold is far easier to grant than one made at midnight. Ask for the cancellation terms in writing when you book.
Fast Facts
- A late cancellation, a no-show or damage can each trigger a charge.
- Deadlines vary by property and rate, and many fall a day or two before arrival.
- Prepaid or nonrefundable rates are usually the least flexible.
- A call made while the room can still be resold gives you the most leverage.
The charge at #8 is one guests rarely think to dispute.
#8 – The Amenity Fee for Things That Were Closed
Resort and amenity fees cover the pool, the gym, Wi-Fi and more. But what if the pool is drained for repairs the whole week? One 2026 guide says that if an amenity included in the fee was unavailable, you may be able to negotiate a partial refund or waiver at checkout.
Keep notes as you go. A photo of the “closed for maintenance” sign is stronger than a complaint made from memory. The hotel doesn’t have to agree, but a calm, specific request tends to land better.
The next one shows how much the way you book matters.
#7 – The Resort Fee That Some Hotels Waive for Direct Bookings
Booking through a third-party site can cost you more than you’d think. A hotel industry guide notes that some hotels waive resort fees when you book through their own website rather than a third-party site. It’s not universal, so check each property.
There’s a catch. A prepaid room may still require you to pay resort fees or deposits at the hotel, according to one 2026 fee guide. Read the fine print before you pay in advance.
Now the senior rates at #6, #5 and #4 are where age finally enters the picture.
#6 – The Full-Price Gap on Hilton’s 65+ Senior Rate
Hilton sets its senior cutoff at 65. Its Senior Rate gives travelers 65 and older a discount off the Best Available Rate at participating properties, recently put at up to about 6%. It varies by hotel.
Many travelers rank it as a must-use perk. Yet one guide says Hilton Honors member rates, advance-purchase rates or an AAA rate frequently beat it. Hilton’s longtime AARP discount has reportedly been discontinued. Compare every special rate before you click.
Choose the wrong rate and you leave money behind, as the next entry shows.
#5 – Choice Hotels’ 10% Senior Cut Starts at 60, Not 65
Choice Hotels starts earlier than Hilton. Guests 60 and older, or AARP members of any age, save up to 10% with advance reservations at participating hotels. That covers brands like Comfort Inn, Quality Inn and Sleep Inn.
The booking path matters. Pick “Senior/AARP” from the special-rate dropdown online, or call and request the Senior Rate. Proof of age or an AARP card is required at check-in. Without it, the discount can vanish at the counter.
Quick Compare
- Hilton: 65 and older, recently up to about 6% off the Best Available Rate.
- Choice Hotels: 60 and older or AARP members, up to 10% with advance booking.
- Wyndham: 60 and older, savings on the Standard Rate with valid ID at check-in.
The next one starts earlier still.
#4 – The Age-55 Rate Most Travelers Never Ask About
Some chains don’t wait until 60. Best Western’s senior discount is commonly cited as starting at 55, Choice Hotels and Wyndham at 60, and Hilton at 65. Rates and participation vary by property, so the cutoff on your confirmation is the one that counts.
Wyndham says guests 60 and older get savings on the Standard Rate at participating locations, with valid ID at check-in. At Motel 6, one guide says AARP members get 10% off plus late checkout. That pairs a rate cut with a charge waived, which is the best combination on this list.
The next mistake can cost more than any single discount.
#3 – The Walk-In Premium You Pay for Not Booking Ahead
Senior rates often come with strings. Choice’s discount, for example, is up to 10% and requires booking in advance rather than walking in. Skip the reservation and you may skip the discount.
That means the “drop” is really a timing deal. Hotels often reward guests who commit early, and the senior rate is just one way that shows up. A phone call a week ahead can lock the lower price in.
At a Glance
- Senior rates like Choice’s require an advance reservation.
- Proof of age or an AARP card is needed at check-in.
- Member, advance-purchase and AAA rates can beat the senior rate.
- A confirmation email in hand protects the price you were quoted.
The last two entries hit the biggest line on the bill.
#2 – The Resort Fee That Loyalty Programs Wipe Out on Award Stays
Here’s a surprise for anyone sitting on a pile of hotel points. Some hotel loyalty programs waive resort fees, especially if you book with points. It depends on the brand and the location.
Resort fees are almost always charged per room, per night, not per person. So a two-person trip pays the same as a solo one. That makes a points stay an even better deal for anyone who isn’t traveling alone.
But the biggest charge of all is still waiting at #1.
#1 – The “Mandatory” Resort Fee That the Front Desk Can Still Waive
Since May 12, 2025, companies that offer hotel rooms or other short-term lodging must display the total price up front. The rule doesn’t end resort fees. It doesn’t prohibit any fees or cap the amount a company can charge.
One guide says it’s almost impossible to opt out unless you have elite status or can persuade an employee to waive it. Even one night means a full day’s fee. Many travelers argue a fee you can’t decline shouldn’t be called a fee. Hotels respond that it covers amenities.
No hotel promises to drop a charge because you’re over 65. What works is asking early, booking ahead, and carrying your ID or AARP card. Parking, late checkout and resort charges are often discretionary, and that gives you room to ask. Senior rates are real but modest, and other rates sometimes beat them.
The fee that looks fixed on the screen is often just the one nobody asked about. Which charge has surprised you most on a hotel bill?
