On November 6, 2024, searches for how to leave the country jumped by more than eightfold in a single day, by one relocation tracker’s count. Since then, the question of where Americans actually go has become a steady topic. The figures are fuzzy, though. One estimate puts the number of Americans living abroad at roughly nine million[1], while another tracker’s headline gives a range starting at four million[2].

What’s easier to measure is how the destinations rank on quality of life. Some indexes track purchasing power, healthcare and pollution. Others simply ask people how satisfied they are with their lives. Nine places keep turning up in both the rankings and the relocation chatter, and each one has a different draw.

The Netherlands took the top spot in Numbeo’s Quality of Life Index by Country for 2026[3]. It finished just ahead of Denmark and Luxembourg in a tightly clustered top three.[3] The gaps are small enough that the order could easily shuffle next year.

The Dutch profile is well rounded rather than extreme in any one area. Numbeo’s data gives it a safety index of 74.5, a healthcare index of 81.5 and a climate index of 86.9.[3] Public transport, bike friendly cities and a culture that prioritizes work life balance[4] are often cited as part of the appeal for people moving there.

Denmark placed second on Numbeo’s 2026 list and third in the 2026 World Happiness Report. The report’s coverage credits its welfare state for that position, one it has held near the top for as long as the report has existed.[5] Few countries show up this consistently across different kinds of rankings.

Copenhagen adds to the case. The Economist Intelligence Unit’s 2025 Global Liveability Index named it the world’s most liveable city, replacing Vienna.[6] Numbeo also shows Danes with strong purchasing power, though the country’s cost of living index sits higher than the Netherlands, Germany or Finland.

Switzerland: High Pay, Higher Prices

Switzerland is the clearest trade off on this list. Numbeo gives it the highest purchasing power index among the European countries in its table, at 176.1, but also a cost of living index of 110.7.[7] In plain terms, salaries stretch far, yet daily life is expensive.

Safety and stability help balance the bill. Zurich is regularly named among the safest cities in the world, alongside Vienna, Helsinki, Copenhagen and Oslo.[8] The country also lands tenth in the 2026 World Happiness Report.[9] Housing is the weak spot, since Numbeo’s property price to income ratio is among the steepest in Europe.

Germany: Solid, Orderly and Easier on the Wallet

Germany ranked eighth on Numbeo’s 2026 index, ahead of Iceland and Norway. It’s also described as a popular destination for Americans looking to move abroad in 2026.[10] The draw is a big economy with a strong job market and a lower cost of living than its richer neighbors.

The data shows where it falls short of the Netherlands. Germany’s safety index is 61.6, well below the Dutch score, and its pollution index is 28.2.[7] It still posts a climate index near 83 and a solid purchasing power score, which is why it stays in the top ten.

Spain: Sunshine and Healthcare Without the Nordic Price Tag

Spain sits just behind the United States on Numbeo’s 2026 list, at 16th, versus 15th for the U.S. Its cost of living index is 51.6, far below Switzerland or Denmark, while its climate index is the highest of any European country in that table at 92.8.[7] That combination of mild weather and lower prices explains much of its pull.

Americans considering a move often cite practical reasons too. Global Citizen Solutions’ 2026 report points to Spain’s strong public and private healthcare and to pensions that go further there.[11] One tracker also lists a digital nomad visa as a key draw. Pollution is the one weaker mark, with an index of 35.3.

Portugal: The Search Favorite With Fine Print

Portugal gets a lot of attention from Americans. One site reports that Portugal overtook Canada as the most searched relocation destination for Americans for the first time[1], though that reflects search interest, not completed moves. Portugal is also named among the easiest countries for Americans to move to, thanks to accessible visa options and lower income requirements.[12]

On quality of life scores, it’s more modest. Numbeo puts it 28th in 2026, behind the United States, Spain, Canada and France.[13] Rules are also shifting. Europe has been tightening residency rules through ancestry, naturalization and investment paths, even as Portugal, Spain and Germany remain top choices.[8] Anyone planning a move should check current visa terms directly.

Costa Rica is the standout in the 2026 World Happiness Report. It ranked fourth with a score of 7.439.[14] That’s the highest ranking ever recorded by a Latin American country.[14] It beat Sweden and Norway, despite far lower national income.

For Americans, the entry path matters as much as the score. Most must apply for a residency category such as pensionado, rentista or a work based permit for long term stays.[15] The country’s appeal rests on its climate, biodiversity and laid back lifestyle.[15]

Mexico: The Biggest American Community Abroad

Mexico is by far the most common landing spot for Americans, though the headcount depends on the source. One estimate cites around 1.2 million U.S. citizens, based on 2023 data from the Association of Americans Resident Overseas.[12] Another puts it at over 1.6 million, the largest American expat community anywhere.[1]

Its happiness ranking is also higher than many expect. Mexico placed 12th in the 2026 World Happiness Report.[14] That put it ahead of wealthier countries like Ireland, Australia and Germany.[16] The same tracker says Americans don’t need a visa for the first 180 days.[2]
