Delta Air Lines has spent recent months restoring long-haul links across the Pacific while signaling that its next phase of growth will center on Asia rather than additional European cities. The carrier resumed service to Hong Kong this summer after a six-year pause and added a new nonstop to Manila. Last week it also confirmed plans to return to Tokyo’s Narita Airport, a former hub site.
Why Asia Stands Out for Future Growth
Chief commercial officer Joe Esposito described Asia as the clearest opportunity for expansion in coming years. The airline already maintains extensive service to Europe and benefits from joint ventures with Air France, KLM and Virgin Atlantic that open dozens of onward destinations through one-stop connections. Access to major Asian business centers remains thinner by comparison. Esposito noted that the largest economies on the far side of the Pacific represent the markets where Delta intends to increase its presence. This focus aligns with a broader strategy of serving key commercial hubs directly rather than relying solely on partner networks.
Recent Pacific Restorations Already Underway
The airline has moved quickly on several routes that had been suspended for years. Service to Hong Kong returned this summer for the first time since 2018. A new nonstop to Manila was announced at the same time. The return to Narita marks another step toward rebuilding a presence that once included connections to Guam, Shanghai and Taipei. These moves come from Delta’s West Coast gateways at Los Angeles and Seattle, which provide stronger departure points than existed after the 2008 Northwest merger.
Confirmed Return to Singapore
Esposito stated plainly that the carrier will resume flights to Singapore. “We’re going to be back in Singapore,” he said during an interview this week. No schedule or aircraft type has been released, though observers expect the route to originate from Seattle given the airline’s existing hub there and the absence of nonstop service from Los Angeles. United Airlines remains the only U.S. carrier currently operating to Changi Airport. Delta last served the city via Tokyo until 2019. Travelers planning Asia itineraries will gain an additional option once the route launches, though exact timing remains under review.
Additional Long-Haul Steps Beyond Asia
Pacific expansion does not mean all other growth stops. Delta will begin nonstop flights to Riyadh in October, becoming the first U.S. carrier to offer direct service to Saudi Arabia. It also recently added a new Austin-to-Paris route that begins in 2027. These additions illustrate a measured approach that balances new markets with restored ones. The airline continues to evaluate where demand and operational strength align most effectively. The return to Singapore and the wider Asian emphasis reflect a deliberate recalibration after years of heavier investment in transatlantic flying. For passengers, the changes point to more direct choices on long-haul trips to the region’s major commercial centers in the years ahead.
