Delta Air Lines has tightened access to complimentary upgrades in recent years as it sells more premium cabin seats outright. Medallion elite members and holders of certain co-branded credit cards remain eligible for free moves into Delta First, Delta One on select routes, Delta Premium Select and Delta Comfort on domestic flights. The process follows a strict hierarchy that rewards higher status, specific fare types and other factors.
Eligibility for Complimentary Upgrades
All Delta Medallion members and holders of the Delta SkyMiles Reserve American Express cards qualify for complimentary upgrades on flights within the United States, including Hawaii. The benefit also extends to certain Aeromexico-operated flights between the U.S. and Mexico plus select routes in Central America, the Caribbean, Colombia and Ecuador. Basic Economy tickets and some international Premium Select or Delta One segments fall outside the program. Diamond and Platinum members can move into Delta Comfort immediately upon booking when space exists. Gold members wait until 72 hours before departure, while Silver members must wait until 24 hours. Upgrades into Delta First or domestic Delta One follow the same status-based windows but clear only when inventory allows.
The Upgrade Priority Hierarchy
Delta ranks upgrade requests according to a fixed sequence that begins with Medallion status level. The full order then considers the type of ticket purchased, Million Miler standing, Travel Experience tier, credit card ownership, corporate travel status, current-year Medallion Qualification Dollars and the date the upgrade request was submitted.
- Medallion status tier
- Product purchased, ranked from refundable Premium Select down to award Main Cabin
- Million Miler status
- Travel Experience tier
- Reserve American Express card membership
- Platinum American Express card membership
- Corporate ticket designator
- Current-year Medallion Qualification Dollars
- Date and time of upgrade request
Ties are broken by moving down the list until a distinction appears. Upgrade certificates and paid mileage upgrades sit above this complimentary list.
Clearance Windows and Gate Standby
Diamond and Platinum members begin clearing into Delta First five days before departure. Gold members start at 72 hours, and Silver members at 24 hours. Any request still open at check-in moves automatically to the airport standby list for possible gate clearance. Even when an upgrade does not clear in advance, space can open at the gate if higher-status passengers or last-minute changes free seats. Passengers receive notification through the Fly Delta app or at the gate if their request succeeds.
Upgrade Certificates and Miles Options
Platinum and Diamond members receive Global or Regional Upgrade Certificates through annual Choice Benefits selections. These certificates carry higher priority than standard complimentary upgrades and can confirm at booking when inventory exists. Global certificates cover international and domestic routes, while Regional certificates apply to the same markets as regular Medallion upgrades. Members may also use SkyMiles to upgrade existing tickets through the Upgrade with Miles feature. Delta prices these redemptions at roughly 1.07 cents per mile, though award tickets sometimes deliver better value. Both certificate and mileage upgrades earn Medallion Qualification Dollars on the amount spent.
Practical Steps to Improve Odds
Travelers increase their chances by avoiding peak business travel days such as Sunday evenings, Monday mornings and Fridays. Holding a Reserve American Express card adds priority after status and fare type. Booking refundable or higher-fare products also moves a passenger higher on the list. For certificate users, applying the certificate at booking on new Delta-operated flights can be done online. Existing bookings or partner flights require a call to Delta at least 24 hours before departure. On connecting itineraries, specifying the priority leg prevents the certificate from clearing on a short segment while the longer leg remains waitlisted.
