Hunterdon County, New Jersey – New Jersey draws millions each year to its Atlantic beaches and boardwalks, yet a quieter landscape sits just west of the turnpike in the central western part of the state. Hunterdon County stretches across preserved farmland, rivers, and low mountains roughly an hour from both New York City and Philadelphia. The area has earned recognition as a top hidden destination, with its tourism board promoting it as “The Other Side of Jersey.” ([1])

The Landscape That Sets It Apart

Hunterdon County covers a rural stretch defined by rolling hills, forests, and the Delaware River along its western edge. Fifteen mountains rise within its borders, creating a backdrop for hiking, biking, and paddling that feels far removed from coastal crowds. The Delaware and Raritan Canal towpath trails run for miles, linking several riverside communities and offering flat routes suitable for all levels.

More than 1,400 working farms dot the countryside, supporting a strong farm-to-table scene. Visitors can stop at roadside stands, weekly markets, or festivals that highlight local produce. The county’s wineries and breweries add another layer, turning a day outdoors into an easy pairing of scenery and local flavors.

Three Towns That Anchor a Visit

Flemington serves as the county seat and a natural starting point. Its compact downtown features Victorian architecture, many buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The preserved Stangl Factory now houses shops, galleries, and a year-round indoor farmers’ market, while Main Street offers antique stores and occasional classic-car shows.

Clinton sits farther northwest along the South Branch Raritan River. The Red Mill Museum Village preserves an 1810 mill complex with outbuildings and artifacts that illustrate the area’s industrial past. A short walk across the historic 1870 truss bridge leads to the Hunterdon Art Museum, housed in another restored mill and known for contemporary exhibits and summer terrace events.

Lambertville lies at the southern end, directly across the river from New Hope, Pennsylvania. The town’s antique shops and galleries draw day-trippers, and the Delaware River towpath begins right at the edge of downtown. Its walkable scale makes it convenient for combining culture with a riverside stroll.

Wineries and Dining That Reward Exploration

Two standout wineries near Ringoes attract visitors seeking quality bottles and vineyard views. Unionville Vineyards grows grapes across hundreds of preserved acres and has earned high scores from major critics for its Chardonnay and Rhône-style reds. Old York Cellars offers tastings, cabana seating, and Spanish-inspired dishes prepared by a chef with experience at a three-Michelin-star restaurant.

Restaurants throughout the county emphasize seasonal ingredients. In Flemington, Matt’s Red Rooster Grill serves New American plates from a wood-fired grill inside a Victorian home. Nearby options range from casual ice cream and kombucha spots to more formal dining rooms that highlight local farms. Many establishments operate as BYOB, allowing guests to bring bottles from the wineries they just visited.

Places to Stay for a Quiet Reset

Several inns provide comfortable bases without the bustle of larger resorts. The Lambertville Station Inn overlooks the Delaware River and places guests steps from downtown shops and the canal towpath. Chimney Hill Estate Inn, set on eight acres outside Lambertville, features rooms in a historic stone house and converted barns, complete with fireplaces and outdoor hot tubs.

Woolverton Inn in Stockton occupies a bluff above the river on a property with resident sheep and extensive gardens. Its rooms and cottages include period details alongside modern comforts, and a recently opened restaurant operates in a restored barn on site. Each property sits within a short drive of the county’s main towns and trails, making day trips simple.

Hunterdon County rewards travelers who arrive expecting something different from the state’s better-known shoreline. Its combination of preserved scenery, small-town character, and accessible food and wine experiences creates a low-key alternative that continues to fly under the radar for many visitors.
