Two longtime friends set out for coastal Maine in early summer, combining scenic drives, island bike rides and lobster-focused meals with a practical check on the refreshed American Express Gold Card. The $325 annual fee card offered targeted statement credits, bonus points on travel and dining, and hotel perks that shaped their itinerary from the start. Over two days they moved from Portland south to Cape Elizabeth and north along the coast to Rockland and Freeport, tracking how the benefits applied in real time.
Flights, Upgrades and the Drive North
One traveler flew from Houston and the other from Los Angeles, booking airfare directly with airlines to earn three Membership Rewards points per dollar through the card. At the rental counter the Hertz Five Star status attached to one account delivered an upgrade to an SUV, useful for winding coastal roads. The prepaid reservation also earned two points per dollar when booked through Amex Travel.
They added loyalty numbers after booking so elite benefits would apply. The group then headed toward the Maine coast, stopping first at Two Lights State Park in Cape Elizabeth for ocean views and an early lobster roll at the local shack.
Island Rides, Hotel Credits and Dining Savings
After the park they took the ferry to Peaks Island for bike rentals and a loop around the quiet roads. Lemonades and a glass of rosé at a waterfront spot earned another round of four points per dollar on the restaurant purchase. Back in Portland they checked into the Press Hotel, an Autograph Collection property that participates in both Marriott Bonvoy and The Hotel Collection.
Prepaid booking through Amex Travel produced five points per dollar on the stay plus a $100 credit toward eligible charges. The credit covered parking and several meals, including breakfast pancakes and evening drinks. Both travelers received room upgrades and used the credit to offset costs without additional out-of-pocket spending beyond the prepaid rate.
One evening they dined at Wayside Tavern, a Resy restaurant in a historic mansion. The card’s biannual Resy credit of up to $50 applied after enrollment, reducing the bill for oysters, scallops, pasta and halibut. The next night at Central Provisions the second traveler used the remaining half of the annual credit on tuna crudo, crab, lobster pasta and desserts.
Supermarket Stops, Art and Final Coastal Stops
The second day began with a stop at Whole Foods for road snacks, where four points per dollar applied on up to $25,000 in annual supermarket purchases. The drive continued through fishing villages to Rockland for another lobster lunch and a visit to the Farnsworth Art Museum. In Freeport one traveler found a summer hat at the L.L. Bean flagship before a quick Dunkin’ stop that triggered the monthly $7 statement credit on U.S. purchases.
By the end of the trip the combination of points, credits and hotel benefits had offset several hundred dollars in meals, parking and incidentals while still delivering the core experience of ocean views, fresh seafood and time with friends. The card’s structure rewarded the specific mix of air travel, dining and prepaid hotel stays that defined the short getaway.
