Qantas has moved up the retirement of its Airbus A380 fleet by four years, with the first aircraft expected to leave service in 2028 rather than the previously announced 2032 date. The decision aligns with the arrival of dozens of new long-haul jets that will reshape the Australian carrier’s international operations. Updated Fleet Timeline and Deliveries
The airline placed an order in 2023 for 12 Airbus A350s and 12 Boeing 787 Dreamliners to replace older wide-body types, including the A380. Executives now expect 17 of those new aircraft to enter the fleet this year, followed by another 31 in 2027. That accelerated inflow of modern jets has allowed Qantas to advance the A380 phase-out without disrupting long-haul capacity.
Retirement of the remaining ten A380s will occur gradually over several years once the process begins. The carrier has not released a precise schedule for individual aircraft withdrawals, but the overall transition is designed to maintain service levels on key routes while introducing newer, lower-cost equipment.
Industry-Wide Move Away from the Superjumbo
High operating costs have driven many carriers to reduce or eliminate A380 operations. The four-engine design and substantial weight result in higher fuel burn compared with modern twin-engine alternatives, an issue magnified by elevated fuel prices in 2026. Airlines also face the challenge of filling more than 400 seats on every flight to achieve profitability.
Airbus delivered its final A380 in 2021, and production has ended. Besides Qantas, nine other carriers continue to operate the type, with Emirates maintaining the largest fleet by a wide margin. The trend illustrates how newer aircraft have altered the economics of very large long-haul jets.
Current A380 Routes and Cabin Features
Travelers can still experience Qantas A380 service on three routes from the United States to Australia. Those flights operate from Los Angeles to Sydney, Los Angeles to Melbourne, and Dallas Fort Worth to Sydney. Each aircraft carries 485 passengers, including a dedicated international first-class cabin and 70 business-class seats.
The first-class product remains one of the few true lie-flat suites still offered by major carriers on transpacific routes. Business-class passengers receive lie-flat pods with direct aisle access. These features continue to attract premium travelers even as the fleet ages.
New Business-Class Suites for Incoming 787s
Qantas has unveiled a next-generation business-class suite that will equip newly delivered Boeing 787-9 aircraft. The design includes sliding privacy doors, an 80-inch bed length, wider footwells, and a 19-inch entertainment screen. The color scheme draws inspiration from Western Australia’s Pilbara region.
The carrier describes the product as an evolution of its current business-class offering. It will become the standard for future 787-9 deliveries and is expected to improve the premium experience on routes that previously relied on older aircraft. The introduction marks a clear upgrade path as the A380 fleet winds down.
Redeeming Points for Qantas Flights
Members of Qantas Frequent Flyer can access award space directly, while Oneworld alliance partners provide additional booking options. In the United States, American Airlines AAdvantage and the Atmos Rewards program of Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines allow partner awards on Qantas metal.
Several U.S. transferable rewards programs, including those from American Express, Capital One, Citi, and Rove, support 1:1 transfers into Qantas Frequent Flyer. These channels give travelers flexibility to reach Australia and other long-haul destinations even as the fleet composition changes.
The combination of an earlier A380 exit and the arrival of refreshed premium cabins signals a deliberate modernization of Qantas long-haul operations. Passengers will see both the end of an iconic aircraft era and the introduction of updated products designed for greater efficiency and comfort on future flights.
