Qatar Airways has introduced two new conditions that affect how Privilege Club members can use Avios points to book its Qsuite business class product for other travelers. The changes apply specifically to redemptions made for family and friends, while bookings for the account holder remain unaffected. Points collectors who transfer balances from major credit card programs now need to plan ahead to meet the updated criteria before completing companion awards.
The Two New Conditions
Effective immediately, any Privilege Club account used to redeem Avios for someone else must be at least 30 days old. In addition, the account holder must have either credited at least one flight operated by Qatar Airways or a partner airline to the program or completed a transaction on a Qatar Airways cobranded credit card.
These requirements do not apply when members book awards solely for themselves. The airline allows a single account to cover up to ten companions through a combination of the My List and Family and Friends features, but the new eligibility rules must still be satisfied first.
Why the Changes Affect Transfer Strategies
Many travelers keep transferable points in their credit card accounts until award space appears or a transfer bonus is announced. The 30-day account age rule now forces an earlier commitment to Privilege Club if companion travel is planned. Without prior activity on the account, even a successful points transfer cannot be used right away for someone else’s ticket.
The second requirement adds another layer for those who do not regularly fly Oneworld carriers. Members without recent flight activity or a cobranded card may need to take deliberate steps, such as crediting a short paid flight on a partner airline, to unlock companion redemptions.
Workarounds and Partner Alternatives
Travelers can open a Privilege Club account immediately, even without upcoming trips, to begin satisfying the 30-day waiting period. Crediting an inexpensive domestic flight on American Airlines or Alaska Airlines to the program offers one route to meeting the activity requirement. Applying for a Qatar Airways cobranded credit card provides another option for those who prefer that path.
Those who prefer to avoid the new restrictions altogether can book Qsuite awards through partner programs that do not impose the same conditions. Available options include Alaska Airlines Atmos Rewards starting at 70,000 points, British Airways Club from 70,000 Avios, and JetBlue TrueBlue from 83,000 points. Availability through these programs varies, and tools such as Seats.aero can help identify open dates quickly.
Key steps to prepare:
- Create a Privilege Club account now to start the 30-day clock.
- Credit a short Oneworld flight or obtain a cobranded card if companion bookings are likely.
- Check partner programs for Qsuite space when Privilege Club rules prove inconvenient.
The adjustments represent a modest but noticeable shift for frequent users of transferable points who target Qatar’s premium cabin. Members planning future travel with companions should review their account status and consider early enrollment to maintain flexibility.
