The Amazon region stands out for its unmatched scale, from the planet’s largest tropical forest to its vast mangrove belt and the river that carries more water than any other. Recent drilling activity by Brazil’s state oil company has drawn fresh attention to one lesser-known feature of this landscape: a coral reef system lying close to the coast. Experts now highlight the potential consequences for that ecosystem as operations advance.
A Reef System Revealed
Researchers have known about the Amazon Reef for decades, yet it received formal scientific description only in 2016. Brazilian scientists mapped its extent after earlier observations dating back to the 1970s. The system spans roughly 9,500 square kilometers and functions as a corridor supporting marine life across a wide area.
Images captured during a 2017 expedition provided rare visual evidence of the reef’s structure and inhabitants. Those glimpses underscored how little the feature had been studied compared with more famous reefs elsewhere. Its location near the mouth of the Amazon River adds to its distinct character, shaped by the river’s sediment and nutrient flows.
Drilling Advances in the Equatorial Margin
Petrobras received approval in October 2025 to begin prospecting in the Equatorial Margin, an offshore zone stretching from the Amazon River mouth toward the Atlantic. The license covers blocks off the states of Amapá and Rio Grande do Norte. One active site, block FZA-M-59, lies less than 40 kilometers from the reef.
The company is drilling its Morpho well in this area. Earlier applications had faced rejection, but political support, including from President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, helped secure the final permit. Operations mark the start of renewed exploration efforts in waters long viewed as sensitive.
Key Concerns for Marine Biodiversity
Scientists point to the reef’s proximity to the drilling site as a primary source of risk. Potential spills, sediment disturbance, or changes in water quality could affect species that rely on the reef for habitat and migration routes. The system’s role as a biodiversity corridor makes any disruption especially notable.
Uncertainty remains about the full range of species present and how they might respond to industrial activity. Limited baseline data from the region complicates precise predictions. Ongoing monitoring will be needed to track any measurable effects as work continues.
