Silversea has opened a purpose-built luxury property that now serves as the southernmost hotel on Earth and the primary base for its Antarctic expeditions. The 150-room Cormorant at 55 South sits near Puerto Williams in Chile’s Patagonia region, replacing scattered hotel bookings in Punta Arenas with a single, controlled facility minutes from the charter flight departure point. This change streamlines operations for passengers who fly from Santiago to Puerto Williams, spend the night, then continue by air across the Drake Passage to King George Island before boarding an expedition ship.
Operational Shift for Fly-Cruise Itineraries
Previously, Silversea guests on fly-cruise programs stayed in multiple non-Silversea hotels in Punta Arenas while awaiting weather-dependent flights to Antarctica. Weather delays often forced last-minute room searches and fragmented the pre-departure experience. The new hotel consolidates all pre- and post-flight stays in one location, allowing the line to manage logistics more predictably and provide consistent service levels. The property also hosts several pre-boarding activities that once occurred only on the ship, including polar gear fittings, biosecurity inspections, equipment cleaning, and initial briefings. These steps now take place in a dedicated setting, reducing time pressures once guests reach Antarctica. Silversea president Bert Hernandez described the hotel as the point where the journey to Antarctica begins with the welcome guests expect from the brand.
Design and On-Site Facilities
The low-slung building uses concrete, natural wood, stone, and earthy textiles with accents of orange, yellow, and green to reflect the surrounding landscape. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame views of forests, the sea, and the Dientes de Navarino peaks. An indoor firepit anchors the main lounge, while an outdoor terrace offers additional seating for observing the terrain. Guest rooms feature mountain or sea views, local wood finishes, and green upholstery along with a Nespresso machine and a small refrigerator stocked with water and craft beer. Latitude 55 restaurant highlights regional dishes such as empanadas and an asado barbecue cooked over an open fire. Bar Sur serves Chilean wines, pisco sour tastings, and cocktails made with the local calafate berry. The Uncharted Boutique stocks Chilean handicrafts and last-minute polar equipment.
Before-and-After Comparison
The move to Puerto Williams creates measurable differences in how Silversea structures its Antarctic season.
| Aspect | Previous Arrangement | New Arrangement at Cormorant at 55 South |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation | Multiple hotels in Punta Arenas | Single dedicated property near Puerto Williams |
| Pre-flight activities | Conducted on ship after arrival | Completed at hotel before charter flight |
| Weather contingency | Scrambling for rooms during delays | Controlled on-site capacity |
| Launch point | Primarily Ushuaia for most operators | Puerto Williams for all Silversea Antarctic sailings |
Broader Implications for Antarctic Travel
Silversea now bases its entire Antarctic program out of Puerto Williams, the world’s southernmost settlement, giving it a shorter crossing of the Drake Passage than operators departing from Ushuaia. Fly-cruise options, which avoid the full ship-based Drake crossing, now account for 29 of the line’s 40 Antarctic sailings this season across Silver Endeavour, Silver Wind, and Silver Cloud. The hotel currently operates from October through March, with discussions underway about year-round availability for travelers exploring southern Chile. Guests can also join guided excursions such as kayaking, hiking, birdwatching, and horseback riding in the surrounding Patagonian wilderness, or take a shuttle into Puerto Williams. The Cormorant at 55 South turns what was once a logistical stop into an integrated part of the Antarctic experience, establishing a consistent entry point for Silversea’s high-end voyages to the continent.
