United Airlines has introduced an updated version of its Polaris business class on select Boeing 787-9 aircraft, with the changes most noticeable on routes such as Singapore to San Francisco. The product adds sliding doors for greater privacy along with refined interior details and an improved food and beverage selection. A recent flight on one of the newly delivered planes showed how these elements come together during a nearly 16-hour journey. ([1])
Securing a Seat Through Award Travel
Award space on the new configuration proved accessible for holders of United cobranded credit cards at a rate of 90,000 miles plus taxes one way. The same ticket would have required 250,000 miles without that card benefit. Paid fares for the route reached several thousand dollars, making the mileage redemption particularly attractive. Availability appeared consistent in the direction flown, with options to add domestic connections at the same mileage level.
Layout and Privacy Features on the 787
The premium cabin holds 64 seats arranged in a 1-2-1 configuration across two sections. Side seats angle toward the windows while center pairs offer adjustable partitions. The most notable addition is a set of sliding doors that can close fully once certified, creating a more enclosed space than earlier Polaris designs. On the reviewed flight the doors remained locked open, yet the overall footprint still delivered noticeable separation from the aisle. Studios in the bulkhead rows provide extra room and larger screens for those willing to pay an upgrade fee that ranged from $499 to $599.
Comfort, Amenities and Inflight Details
Each seat includes Saks Fifth Avenue bedding, a Brooks Brothers amenity kit with Perricone MD products, and multiple power and USB-C ports. The 19-inch entertainment screen supports Bluetooth connections, though some passengers reported occasional audio issues with the built-in system. Overhead air nozzles helped maintain a comfortable temperature, and electronic window shades stayed mostly darkened during rest periods. Four lavatories serve the cabin, with crew attention keeping them presentable even after peak use following meal service.
Dining and Beverage Upgrades
Passengers can preorder meals up to 24 hours ahead, and the reviewed flight offered a choice of starters, entrees such as beef tenderloin or salmon, and desserts including made-to-order sundaes. A lighter tapas-style option near arrival featured Singapore-inspired dishes like laksa and Hainan chicken that many found fresher than the main courses. The wine list included notable selections such as Laurent-Perrier Champagne and a Shafer cabernet, reflecting a clear step up in quality. Between meals the galley stocked fruit, chips and instant noodles for those who wanted something light. The new configuration marks a meaningful step in United’s long-haul premium offering, particularly once the privacy doors receive certification. Travelers on equipped 787s can expect a more polished experience that aligns with the airline’s push to compete in the business-class segment.
