Type “over 60” and “single supplement” into a search bar and you’ll find plenty of coach brochures that sound like they’re on your side. So we went hunting for the one rule that waives the charge for anyone who simply picks up the phone and asks. None of the operator pages we checked publish one.

But the search wasn’t wasted. A handful of real coach firms do advertise solo departures with the supplement already gone, and a few traps are tucked into the fine print. Here’s what the operators’ own listings actually say, starting with a name you probably know.

#15 – Leger’s Solo Departures Skip the Supplement Completely

Leger is one of the biggest names in escorted coach touring, and its solo range is the first place to look. Leger says it has run solo traveller holidays for many years, all with sole use of your own room and no single supplement. That is a flat promise, not a “maybe if you ask” deal.

The prices on the listing page are “from” prices, so check your own dates. One 4-day tour is listed from Β£649 and a 5-day tour from Β£989, both marked as no single supplement. One Spanish tour also lists 8 hotel nights and 6 evening meals. The solo price is built into the headline figure, so there is no add-on at checkout. But Leger isn’t the only name that does this.

Insider Tip: When you enquire, ask for the solo-traveller departure list for your preferred month. Don’t just ask for a general discount. That is where the supplement-free pricing sits.

#14 – Shearings Quietly Runs 23 Solo Tours

Shearings is a household name in UK coach holidays, and its solo section is bigger than many people realize. The page lists 23 coach holidays from Β£539 per person. Many are labeled with no single supplement and sole use of your own room.

The range isn’t tiny, either. It includes a 5-day tour from Β£699 and 9-day express-coach trips to Barcelona and Croatia. That’s the same brand that charges supplements on many of its standard tours. The difference comes down to which departure you book.

Fast Facts

  • 23 solo coach holidays are listed on the page.
  • Prices start from Β£539 per person.
  • A 5-day tour is listed from Β£699.
  • Express-coach trips to Barcelona and Croatia run for 9 days.

The next entry shows how Shearings first moved in this direction.

#13 – The 2023 Shearings Move That Wiped Out Charges at 27 Hotels

#13 – The 2023 Shearings Move That Wiped Out Charges at 27 Hotels (Image Credits: Gemini)

This one is a real, documented policy change. Shearings began 2023 by axing single room supplements at 27 Coast & Country hotels in its UK brochures. It applied to both coach holidays and self-drive hotel breaks.

There was a catch. It only applied where single rooms were available, and anyone booking a double or twin room alone still paid a supplement. Single-occupancy rooms were limited at each hotel, and agents were told to urge early booking. The supplement was dropped, but only for a limited number of rooms.

Did You Know: Shearings now operates as a travel brand of the Leger Shearings Group, alongside Leger Holidays, Battlefield Tours and Holt Tours. That’s why the solo offers from both brands look so alike.

Next up is a company that goes further than a few hotels.

#12 – Just Go Holidays Puts a Guarantee in Writing

Just Go’s wording is about as firm as it gets. It guarantees there is no single supplement to pay on any of its Single Traveller holidays. The range covers the UK, Ireland and Europe.

The listings run from short festive breaks to long tours. A 15-day Greek Isles trip is listed from Β£1,899 per person, and a 5-day Liverpool and Chester Christmas break from Β£599. The page also advertises free excursions. A “going solo” label on the tour is what triggers the guarantee. The next operator is a smaller regional name with a seasonal edge.

#11 – Jones Holidays Lists Festive Breaks With No Extra Charge

Jones Holidays has a dedicated solo page. It offers escorted coach holidays for solo travellers with no single supplement to pay. The current listings lean heavily on Christmas.

Two examples show the pricing. A 5-day Isle of Wight trip departing 9 November 2026 is listed from Β£469. A 5-day Weymouth break departing 14 December is listed from Β£535. Solo festive coach breaks for under Β£550 are a rarity in a market where supplements can add far more. And one operator says it has never charged them at all.

Try This: Compare the per-person price on a solo departure against the same hotel on a standard departure. If the solo price is lower or equal, you have found your supplement-free option.

#10 – Grand UK Says It Has Never Charged One on the British Mainland

That is a bold claim, and Grand UK makes it directly. The company says it has never charged additional supplements for single hotel rooms on its British mainland coach holidays. The offer sits under its Good Companions brand.

The package is generous on paper. It lists reserved seats on the coach, a Tour Manager, half board accommodation and free local joining points for short breaks. Its over-60s page repeats the offer but limits it to mainland UK coach holidays. The no-supplement promise stops at the water’s edge. A sister-style brand makes a similar offer.

#9 – Palmer Holidays Adds a Host and Door-to-Door Pickup

Palmer’s Good Companions breaks combine supplement-free pricing with extras. It advertises no single supplement, sociable group tours and door-to-door pick-up. The sales pitch is blunt about fairness.

The listing is specific about what’s waived. Guests can stay at hand-picked hotels without a single or sole occupancy supplement on the advertised price. One 5-day Christmas in Swindon break from 23 December 2026 also lists a Good Companions Host and a welcome drinks reception. Even sole-occupancy charges, the sneakiest kind, are covered. The next operator uses almost the same formula.

Editor’s Note: Stating “no single supplement” right in the price line is the standard solo travellers should expect. If a brochure buries the charge in small print, it’s fair to ask why.

#8 – Sunrise Direct Offers Low Deposits and a Fine-Print Limit

Sunrise Direct’s singles range promises no single supplement, sociable group tours and carefully chosen destinations. It also pitches easy booking. The site advertises free local departures and low deposits from Β£65.

Read the asterisk, though. The no single room supplements line is marked as applying to UK mainland holidays. An overseas Sunrise trip may not carry the same deal. Always confirm before paying a deposit.

Quick Compare

  • Just Go Holidays: a written guarantee on its Single Traveller holidays across the UK, Ireland and Europe.
  • Grand UK: never charged on British mainland coach holidays, but not beyond them.
  • Sunrise Direct: no single room supplements, marked for UK mainland holidays.
  • Leisuretime: “many” hotels carry no charge or a small one, so check the hotel.

Meanwhile, one more operator pitches a different mix of tours.

#7 – Leisuretime Says “Many” Hotels Come Free or Cheap

Leisuretime’s wording is more cautious than some rivals. It says many of its hotels come without single supplements or with just a small charge. That is not the same as a blanket guarantee.

The solo section is still worth a look. Many tours include single rooms for either no supplement whatsoever or a very modest additional charge. The page lists 13 holidays for 2026. The words “many” and “modest” mean you must check the hotel-level detail. The next entry isn’t a coach firm, but it matters.

Why It Works: Hotel-by-hotel pricing means two tours from the same company can differ by tens of pounds. Asking for the exact supplement on your chosen hotel avoids nasty surprises.

#6 – Great Rail Journeys Waives It on Selected Tours Only

#6 - Great Rail Journeys Waives It on Selected Tours Only (Image Credits: Gemini)
#6 – Great Rail Journeys Waives It on Selected Tours Only (Image Credits: Gemini)

Great Rail Journeys is mostly known for rail, but its escorted solo page is a useful benchmark. It says it has waived its solo supplement on selected holidays. The key word is “selected”.

The pricing logic is spelled out clearly. Prices on the site assume two people sharing, so solo travellers pay a hotel-applied supplement on tours without the no-supplement offer. It adds that solo travellers can make up as much as 15% of an escorted tour’s guests. You’re rarely the only solo traveller on board.

Worth Knowing

  • The waiver covers selected holidays, not the whole brochure.
  • Listed prices assume two people sharing a room.
  • On tours without the offer, the hotel applies the supplement.
  • Solo travellers can be up to 15% of an escorted tour’s group.

And that brings us to a marketing trick.

#5 – “For the Over-60s” Doesn’t Mean “No Supplement”

#5 – “For the Over-60s” Doesn’t Mean “No Supplement” (Image Credits: Gemini)

Several coach firms aim squarely at older travellers. Grand UK says it specialises in escorted coach breaks tailored for the over 60s. Majestic Tours says its holidays are tailored especially for the over 60s. Caledonian runs a page for coach holidays for over 60s, 70s and 80s.

But an age-targeted brand is not a supplement waiver. In an earlier Which? spot check, Caledonian was among the firms applying single supplements. The age label sells the trip, but it doesn’t set the room price. Some travellers will see that as clever marketing rather than a perk.

The Psychology Behind This: A brand that speaks to your age feels like it’s on your side. That feeling is worth separating from the actual price breakdown on the booking page.

Still, the standard brochure prices tell their own story.

#4 – Standard Shearings Tours Still Charge Up to Β£299 Extra

#4 - Standard Shearings Tours Still Charge Up to Β£299 Extra (Image Credits: Gemini)

The contrast within one brand is striking. Shearings’ UK tour listing shows an 8-day trip from Β£1,199 per person with a single supplement from Β£299, and a 3-day trip from Β£349 with one from Β£149. Those are ordinary departures, not solo ones.

Cheaper tours show smaller charges. Other listings show supplements from Β£79 or Β£89 per person. The same company can charge nothing on one tour and hundreds on another. The departure you pick matters far more than your age.

By The Numbers: On Shearings’ own UK listing, “from” supplements range from Β£79 to Β£299 per person. That gap is bigger than the cost of many short breaks.

And even when a supplement is dropped, there’s a room-type catch.

Not every “no supplement” room is the same. At Shearings, guests booking a double or twin room alone still incur a supplement for sole occupancy. Only true single rooms qualify for the waiver.

Great Rail Journeys makes a similar point. Most hotels offer double or twin rooms for sole occupancy, while some have standard single rooms that also carry a supplement. “Single room” and “no charge” aren’t automatically linked. The next entry shows why people notice this.

Insider Tip: Ask in writing whether your quoted price is for a true single room or a twin used alone. Then ask how many single rooms are left for your date.

Next, we look at what happens when the charge sneaks through.

#2 – Which? Caught One Solo Traveller Paying Β£608 More for a Majorca Holiday

The consumer group’s research put numbers on the problem. Which? Travel found solo travellers routinely paying over the odds for package holidays, cruises and coach holidays. One Tui Majorca holiday was Β£840 per person for a couple but Β£1,448 for a solo traveller.

On coaches, the findings were pointed. Spot checks found single supplements common among coach companies, even for rooms designed for solo use. One traveller was given a “filthy” room on a Llandudno trip and was moved to a tiny single while still paying a Β£79 supplement. That research is from an earlier period, and some operators have since advertised supplement-free solo ranges.

Try This: One tour marketplace says supplements can run 10 to 50% above the listed price. It suggests hunting for twin-share options or solo promotions to avoid them.

So, if age doesn’t kill the supplement, what does the over-60 label actually buy you?

#1 – The Age-Based Discount That’s Real (and It Isn’t a Supplement Waiver)

There is one genuine perk for over-60s on coaches. After the government scrapped half-price over-60s concessionary fares in October 2011, National Express introduced a Senior Coachcard giving a third off. There are no restrictions on peak or off-peak travel times.

But look closely at what it covers. It applies to Standard and Fully Flexible National Express fares to towns, cities and airports. It is for scheduled coach travel, not escorted tour packages with hotel rooms. The only age-based coach saving we could verify has nothing to do with single supplements. The real supplement-killer is choosing a solo departure.

At a Glance

  • The perk: a Senior Coachcard giving a third off National Express fares.
  • The timing: it followed the October 2011 end of half-price concessionary fares.
  • The limit: scheduled coach travel only, with no hotel rooms involved.
  • The supplement fix: solo departures, not an age label.

So the headline’s big promise didn’t check out. We found no operator publishing an over-60 rule that wipes supplements for anyone who enquires. What we did find was seven operators advertising solo departures with no single supplement, from Leger and Shearings to Just Go and Grand UK, plus a few more with partial offers. And we found the catches: UK-only limits, limited single rooms and twin-room charges.

Age may help you pick a tour, but the departure decides the price. Which operator would you ask first, and has anyone ever actually had a supplement waived? Tell us in the comments.
