Most of the Canada and U.S. border is a line you can’t see. It runs through rivers, orchards and mountain passes, and plenty of small towns sit right beside it. For travelers on the American side, a day trip north can be surprisingly easy.

The five towns below were picked for how close they are to the line and for what they offer once you arrive. Some are known for theatre and wine, others for chocolate, islands, mountains or desert heat. Border rules and wait times change, so check current requirements before you go.

Niagara-on-the-Lake sits on the Niagara Peninsula where the Niagara River meets Lake Ontario, across the river from New York.[1] It had a population of 19,088 in the 2021 census.[2] It is also the only town in Canada with a lord mayor.[2] That’s a small oddity, though it fits the town’s polished, heritage feel.

The border has shaped its history. In 1797 the colonial capital moved to York because Newark, as the town was then called, was so close to the U.S.[2] Today the draw is more relaxed. The Shaw Festival is held here every year, and the wider Niagara Region receives up to 12 million visitors annually.[3] Wineries, a walkable Old Town and a quieter pace make it a good contrast to the busier falls nearby.

Gananoque, Ontario

Gananoque sits on the St. Lawrence River in the Thousand Islands region, close to one of the most scenic crossings on the border. The Thousand Islands Bridge system runs 8.5 miles from near Alexandria Bay, New York, to Ivy Lea near Gananoque, linking Interstate 81 with Highway 401.[4] That makes the drive from upstate New York simple and direct.

The crossing has some history of its own. The bridges were dedicated on August 18, 1938.[4] The Canadian border station, Lansdowne, is sometimes called Gananoque, after the nearby town where international ferry service has long been provided.[5] Once you’re in town, the river and its islands are the main attraction, so plan some time on the water.

St. Stephen is about as close to the U.S. as a Canadian town can get. The St. Croix River forms the border between the town and Calais, Maine, and three bridges connect them.[6] The newest crossing, International Avenue, opened on November 16, 2009, and was the first new border crossing on the Canada and U.S. line in 42 years.[7] One small tip from a local tourism page: you’ll need to change your watch to the right time zone once you cross.[8]

The town is best known for chocolate. St. Stephen was officially registered as Canada’s Chocolate Town in 2000 and hosts Chocolate Fest at the start of each August.[8] The Chocolate Museum sits in the original Ganong candy factory, only three blocks from the U.S. border.[8] Outdoor visitors have options too, since Ganong Nature Park covers 350 acres of coastal land with walking trails.[9]

Waterton Park, Alberta

Waterton is the one mountain stop on this list. The townsite sits inside Waterton Lakes National Park in the southwest corner of Alberta, a short distance from Montana. The park joins Glacier National Park to form the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, which was created in 1932 and later recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The setting is the draw here, with lake views, peaks and wildlife close to town. The Prince of Wales Hotel, built in the 1920s, overlooks Upper Waterton Lake and is one of the area’s best known landmarks. The park also suffered a major wildfire in 2017, so recovery and trail conditions are worth checking before you travel. Road crossings into Montana, such as Chief Mountain, run on limited seasonal hours, so confirm opening times first.

Osoyoos sits at the southern tip of the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia. The town is 3.6 km north of the U.S. border in Washington.[10] On Highway 97 south of town is a 24 hour crossing between Osoyoos and Oroville, Washington.[10] The town had 5,556 residents in 2021.[10]

It’s famous for its dry heat. Osoyoos is often described as Canada’s only desert, with the lowest rainfall, highest temperatures and warmest lakes.[11] A more careful note from one reference: it claims to be a desert, but it’s about 100 mm too wet to count as one.[10] Either way, Osoyoos Lake is 11 miles long, has nearly 30 miles of shoreline, and extends down into Washington.[12] Add the nearby vineyards and the Nk’Mip Desert Cultural Centre on the town’s east side, and you have a full day or a long weekend.
