There’s a moment every traveler knows well – standing somewhere beautiful, checking your wallet, and realizing you’ve barely made a dent in your budget. That feeling is surprisingly rare back home, but it can be your everyday reality if you know where to go. The gap between what a dollar buys in the United States and what it buys in the right corner of the world is still strikingly wide in 2026, even if currency shifts and tourism inflation have quietly narrowed it in some destinations people used to rely on.

According to the IMF, non-traded goods and services – like meals, haircuts, and taxi rides – tend to be significantly cheaper in lower-income countries than in wealthier ones, meaning the real purchasing power of the dollar in these markets is consistently greater than the face-value exchange rate suggests. That’s the engine driving every destination on this list. These aren’t obscure hardship posts; they’re places with real infrastructure, genuine culture, and daily life that simply wasn’t built around American price expectations.

1. Vietnam

For the fifth consecutive year, Vietnam is the most affordable country in the world for expats, ranking first out of 46 destinations when it comes to personal finances, according to the 2025 Expat Insider study by InterNations. That consistency is rare and worth taking seriously. In Vietnam, 89% of respondents were pleased with the general cost of living, while 87% said their disposable household income was about or more than enough to lead a comfortable life, compared with a global average of just 40% and 69%, respectively.

Vietnam is one of the most affordable countries in Southeast Asia with an average cost of living of $500–700 per month – significantly lower than neighboring countries such as Malaysia or Thailand, where the cost of living typically starts at $700. Rent costs of $200–350 per month make Vietnam extremely attractive for those looking to cut their expenses. The major travel essentials – accommodation, food, and public transport – are all fairly affordable, so travelers may end up spending much less than expected. From Da Nang’s beaches to the mountain town of Sapa, the value holds up across the entire country.

2. Thailand

Thailand is one of the top-rated countries for affordable living, with an average monthly cost of around $600–900 – almost three times cheaper than living in an average European city such as Paris or Munich. Rent ranges from $200 to $400 per month, making it accessible even for budget travelers. With one US dollar fetching roughly 35 Thai baht, everyday costs drop dramatically. A five-star hotel for less than $100 a night is genuinely achievable here.

Food is very cheap in Thailand thanks to a wide selection of street food, where a dish costs $1–3 – significantly lower than average prices in Western Europe or the United States. Street food snacks can be found for $1 or less, and hearty Thai meals at local eateries typically range from $1 to $3. Beyond the food, Thailand’s transport network, beaches, and temples make it one of the most complete travel experiences you can have at this price point. The trick is to eat where locals eat and skip the resort menus entirely.

3. Mexico

Mexico holds the position of a country with a moderate cost of living at $800–1,000 per month – about half the average cost of living in major US cities such as New York or Los Angeles. With rent starting at $300 and a meal costing $3–5 at a restaurant, Mexico is an attractive destination for those seeking budget-friendly living without sacrificing comfort. Its proximity to the US also keeps flights short and relatively affordable, which makes the overall trip economics even more compelling.

Many popular places in the Yucatán Peninsula, including Cancún and Tulum, are priced essentially at Western levels as they are geared entirely toward tourists – Tulum even got so expensive that tourism there collapsed in 2025 with some of the lowest-ever occupancy rates. For greater affordability, look beyond the beach tourism hotspots and head inland to Mérida or Bacalar, or explore Mexico City, Puebla, or Oaxaca. Cities preferred by expats outside of Mexico City include San Miguel de Allende, Puerto Vallarta, Playa del Carmen, Puebla, and Mérida.

4. Colombia

In Colombia, 92% of survey respondents said their disposable income was enough to live comfortably, compared with 69% globally. Notably, no expat in the country flagged cost of living as a major concern before moving, a stark contrast to the global average of 21%. That kind of near-universal satisfaction is a strong signal. Colombia has gotten cheaper for many travelers over the past few years, as the falling value of the peso versus currencies like the US dollar has made it more favorable.

Colombia splits cleanly into two budget tiers: northern Caribbean towns and small Andean cities stay around $40–60 USD per day for budget travelers, while Bogotá and Cartagena’s tourist centers push higher. The set lunch menu (“menú del día”) in countries like Colombia typically costs between $3 and $5 USD and usually includes a soup, main course, and drink. Medellín in particular has developed into one of the most livable and affordable mid-sized cities on the planet, with a thriving café culture and consistently comfortable weather.

5. Bulgaria

Bulgaria stands out as one of Europe’s most affordable destinations, offering excellent value for those seeking a slower pace of life surrounded by nature. Whether you settle in Sofia, Plovdiv, or along the Black Sea coast, everyday costs remain low – a one-bedroom apartment outside city centers averages just $360 USD per month. For Americans looking to experience genuine European culture and history without the price tag of Western Europe, Bulgaria is one of the most overlooked options on the continent.

Bulgaria delivers a high quality of life through its mix of history, culture, and stunning natural scenery, with residents enjoying easy access to mountains, beaches, and thermal springs, while the country’s growing digital infrastructure is attracting remote workers and entrepreneurs. The secondary city of Plovdiv in particular offers a vibrant arts scene and well-preserved old town at a fraction of what you’d pay almost anywhere else in Europe.

6. Georgia (the Country)

Georgia is super cheap, sometimes even rivaling the low costs of countries in South or Southeast Asia. It’s still dealing with political issues as the country decides whether it should be Western- or Russia-aligned, but despite some less-flattering news headlines in 2025 it remains a wonderful destination to visit. The exchange rate is highly favorable for dollar holders, and the local lari has kept Georgia extraordinarily affordable for foreign visitors. Tbilisi ranks among the most underrated capital cities in the world for both experience and value.

In Tbilisi, crumbling façades of traditional wooden Georgian houses stand next to Soviet-era architecture and daring contemporary designs – a city of surprising soul and character. From Tbilisi, visitors can explore the stunning Caucasian mountain range, take a dip in the Black Sea, or visit ancient hilltop monasteries, some of them built inside caves. With one-year visas available for remote workers, Georgia has also become an ideal digital nomad hub within a stone’s throw of Europe. The famous wine, the bread, and the grilled meats cost almost nothing by any Western standard.

7. Peru

Peru is incredibly affordable for travelers, with a solo monthly budget in the range of $950–$1,150. According to Numbeo data, a one-bedroom apartment in Lima runs $350–$500, with three-bedroom places outside the city center at $520–$750. A menú del día in Peruvian cities runs between $2.70 and $4.80 per person – a three-course lunch for the price of a cup of coffee back home. Peru packs in an extraordinary amount of culture, landscape, and cuisine for such a modest daily outlay.

Some of the least expensive countries in South America are Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia. Peru can be very affordable with great-value accommodation and food in the most sought-after destinations, though a visit to Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca will be among the biggest expenses. That’s worth planning for, but it doesn’t change the overall picture. In the Sacred Valley, smaller towns such as Ollantaytambo and Pisac offer similar cultural richness to Cusco at lower prices that stretch travel budgets further.

8. Albania

Albania’s time in the spotlight might make you worry about overtourism, but apart from a few Insta-famous places, Albania remains underexplored – even after a revisit in summer 2025, almost no tourist crowds were found. Beyond the viral appeal of Ksamil, Albania is blessed with a beautiful Mediterranean coastline, with the real secrets being its quirky capital, well-preserved Ottoman-era towns, and beautiful Alps. A mid-range daily budget of around $55 goes a very long way here, covering excellent food, comfortable accommodation, and entry to sites that would cost multiples of that in Greece or Italy just a short ferry ride away.

Beyond the coastline, Albania’s capital Tirana rewards curious visitors, and the newly established Vjosa Wild River National Park now fully protects one of the last wild rivers in Europe – an incredible under-the-radar place for river rafting, canyon hiking, and hot springs. Countries like Albania, Bulgaria, Serbia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina remain the last bastions of old-world affordability in Europe. Albania also uses the euro informally in many tourist areas, which makes budgeting straightforward for American travelers.

9. Indonesia

Indonesia, with an average cost of living of around $340 per month, ranks among the cheapest countries to live in globally – almost three times cheaper than the global average including major cities. Jakarta alone is 60% cheaper than London, making it one of the most affordable capital cities in the world. For travelers rather than residents, Bali and Lombok offer beach and culture experiences at prices that still feel almost implausible to anyone arriving from the United States or Europe. A meal for two at a restaurant costs less than $20, while a trip on public transport costs about $0.25 and a monthly transit pass runs just $12.

Five out of the top 10 most affordable countries for expats in 2025 were from Southeast Asia: Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia – and Indonesia sits comfortably in that group. The archipelago’s sheer size means you can go from volcanic hikes on Java to empty white-sand beaches in Flores to terraced rice paddies in Ubud without ever feeling like you’ve exhausted your options. Skip the overpriced beachfront villas in Seminyak and you’ll find that Indonesia rewards careful spending with some of the most breathtaking experiences on the planet.

What ties all nine of these destinations together is the same underlying logic: their prices were built for local incomes, not imported expectations. That gap – between what things cost there and what they cost at home – is where your dollar gains its real power. The world hasn’t become uniformly expensive yet, and the destinations on this list prove it. Choose one, go soon, and spend freely for once.
