American Express has opened a new redemption path for its Membership Rewards points. Starting July 28, eligible cardmembers can transfer points into the Leaders Club loyalty program of Leading Hotels of the World. The move gives travelers direct access to more than 425 independent luxury properties spread across more than 80 countries.
The Transfer Details
Transfers occur at a 4:1 ratio, meaning 1,000 Membership Rewards points convert to 250 Leaders Club points. The minimum transfer stands at 1,000 points. Leaders Club uses dynamic pricing, so award availability and rates depend on the property and dates selected. This arrangement provides entry to hotels that sit outside major loyalty programs. Properties such as Le Sirenuse on Italy鈥檚 Amalfi Coast, San Ysidro Ranch in California, Royal Mansour Marrakech, Adare Manor in Ireland, and Capella Bangkok become reachable through points.
Access to Independent Luxury Properties
Leading Hotels of the World functions as a curated collection rather than a single chain. Members gain stays at distinctive, high-end properties that often lack representation in programs like Hilton Honors or Marriott Bonvoy. The partnership therefore fills a specific gap for travelers who prefer boutique or iconic independent hotels. Award stays remain subject to availability at each location. The 4:1 ratio is less generous than some existing American Express hotel partners, yet it unlocks a segment of accommodations previously difficult to reach with transferable points.
Added Value for Platinum Cardholders
The transfer option pairs with an existing benefit for eligible American Express Platinum Card and Business Platinum Card members. Those cardholders receive complimentary Leaders Club Sterling status upon enrollment. The status includes daily breakfast for two, up to five annual room upgrades, a 5 percent points bonus on stays, and flexible check-in and checkout when available. Together the transfer capability and status benefits allow Platinum members to both book and enhance their stays at these properties.

Citi ThankYou Rewards added Leaders Club as a partner in 2023 at a 5:1 ratio. American Express therefore offers a more favorable exchange for anyone holding flexible points across multiple programs. The 4:1 rate still requires careful evaluation against other redemption options. American Express Membership Rewards points can be earned on several popular cards, including the Platinum Card, Gold Card, Green Card, Business Platinum Card, and Business Gold Card. Cardmembers who already accumulate these points now have one more premium outlet for them.
