The Limits of a Once-Yearly Choice
Cardmembers must pick one qualifying airline at the start of each calendar year and stick with it. That structure assumes travel patterns remain steady, yet award space, status matches, and schedule changes often redirect bookings to different carriers. When priorities evolve, the credit stays locked to the earlier decision. Many travelers now move between alliances or book based on availability rather than loyalty to a single airline. The mismatch turns a useful perk into an underused one for those whose habits do not align with January forecasts.
Workarounds Lose Reliability
Unofficial methods once helped cardmembers stretch the credit beyond strict incidental fees. Purchases through certain airline portals frequently posted as eligible charges in prior years. Enforcement tightened in early 2026, and those options became less dependable. The change did not create the underlying restriction, but it highlighted how narrowly the benefit is defined. Cardmembers who once found creative ways to apply the credit now face clearer limits on what actually qualifies.
Practical Ways to Modernize the Benefit
American Express could keep the core idea while making it more adaptable to real travel behavior. Allowing one airline switch per quarter would address many mid-year shifts without expanding overall cost. Broadening eligible purchases to include upgrades or award taxes would also increase usefulness. Converting the credit into a flexible Amex Travel statement credit usable on flights, hotels, or cars booked through the platform would align it with other card features.
A choice-based model would let some keep the traditional airline incidental version while others opt for broader travel or even lounge access options. The credit still delivers value for travelers who fly one airline consistently and pay incidental fees regularly. For a growing group whose bookings cross carriers and alliances, however, the current design no longer matches how premium travel actually works. American Express refreshed the Platinum Card last year, yet this benefit stayed largely unchanged. Updating it would restore relevance without requiring major new spending.
