If your dream is to explore the world, you might instinctively look into airfare or the most scenic road trips as your primary travel options. We don’t blame you, as these are common modes of transportation that travelers typically gravitate toward when planning a trip. However, might we suggest considering cruise ships for your next getaway?

Cruise ships are a go-to choice for many as they offer all-inclusive amenities and a variety of entertainment, often making passengers forget that they’re even en route to their ultimate destination. The time spent on board can be just as enjoyable as the destination itself, and many world travelers prefer cruise ships over other methods of travel, especially with the industry’s one-of-a-kind offerings.

We’ve gathered the top bucket-list cruises that you’ll want to embark on at least once in your lifetime due to their breathtaking views, unique destinations, and widely-buzzed about experiences.

Around-the-World Cruise

If you’ve never heard of the Around-the-World Cruise, you’ve been missing out on an epic adventure. They’re an opportunity for travelers to sail around the globe for anywhere from three months to six months, with stops at dozens of countries and iconic landmarks.

These extended cruises typically depart between January and March or April, although they also operate off-season, as noted by Condé Nast Traveler. These long journeys might not appeal to everyone, but they’re especially popular among retirees, digital nomads, and those with flexible schedules who have a thirst for seeing the world. Cruise lines such as Viking, Oceania, and Cunard regularly offer these types of cruises.

What better way to disconnect from the outside world than stepping aboard the Antarctica Expedition Cruise? These cruises (which typically run from November to March, the summer in the Southern Hemisphere) offer an experience like no other as you’ll encounter icebergs, wildlife, and the surreal cold-weather landscape that leaves a lasting impression.

Sailing on this expedition is particularly well-suited for adventurers, wildlife lovers, and those wanting to capture every moment through photography. Sought-after cruise lines offering these cruises are Hurtigruten, Silversea, Quark Expeditions, and Ponant.

Galápagos Islands Cruise

For those yearning for an island getaway, the Galápagos Islands Cruise might be right up your alley. These cruises offer an astonishing view found nowhere else on Earth, including sightings of rare wildlife species such as marine iguanas and blue-footed boobies.

With that said, nature lovers will be particularly interested in cruising to this destination, which can be done via Celebrity Flora, Lindblad/National Geographic, and Silversea.

Norwegian Fjords Cruise

Perhaps cruising through Norway’s stunning Fjords is more your speed. Look no further than the Norwegian Fjords Cruise, which takes passengers along scenic routes of dramatic cliffs, waterfalls, and inviting villages.

Although we can’t imagine everyone not being captivated by this trip, it’s specifically best for scenery seekers, photographers, and those who enjoy hiking. Hurtigruten, Viking, and Holland America Line offer Norwegian Fjords Cruises numerous times a year.

Southeast Asia River Cruise

Food lovers and those who appreciate art and history would favor this vacation. The top cruise lines offering Mediterranean Culture Cruises are Windstar, Viking, Seabourn, and Regent Seven Seas.

The South Pacific and French Polynesian luxury cruises are attractive among tourists, and for good reason. They sail travelers to pristine beaches with crystal-clear blue waters for a journey you’d have to see to believe.

These cruises are renowned for their island-hopping destinations, including Bora Bora, Tahiti, and the Marquesas. They’re also often recommended for a romantic getaway for honeymooners and couples who thrive on beach vacations. Interested travelers can venture on these cruises through Paul Gauguin, Windstar, and Oceania cruise lines.

African River Safari Cruise

Many who’ve taken an Alaska Cruise would say it’s the best way to see the country, and you might feel that way, too, after boarding the ship. The Inside Passage is one of the more sought-after routes, as many favor its calm waters and abundant wildlife.

Those looking for a quiet family trip or anyone seeking adventure would enjoy the Alaska Cruise, and it’s available through Princess, Holland America, and UnCruise.

Things to Know About Cruises

As we mentioned, cruises are a desirable way to travel because of the eye-catching views and accommodations onboard. However, it’s crucial to know what you’re getting into, as it’s a considerably different mode of traveling than others.

For starters, it’s wise to book early as these cruises sell out a year or more in advance. It’s also suggested that you invest in travel insurance, as these trips are generally of high value, and budget for any extra unexpected costs beforehand.

Also, be mindful of the physical activity some destinations require, which might include hiking, climbing, or extensive walks. Additionally, be aware that Wi-Fi and satellite will often be limited, especially in more remote locations.

Like any getaway, it’s essential to thoroughly research the destination and your preferred transportation so you can be adequately prepared and have the experience of a lifetime.
