So I did something simple: I opened ChatGPT and asked it to name the five best U.S. cities for travel. The results were not exactly surprising, but the reasoning behind each pick was genuinely worth exploring. ChatGPT drew on reputation, diversity of experience, and consistent traveler appeal – and the picks landed squarely in line with what the latest data and rankings actually say.
1. New York City, New York – The Undisputed King
ChatGPT placed New York City at the top of its list without hesitation, and the numbers back that up hard. Tourism, a cornerstone of NYC’s global reputation and economy, has come roaring back – the city hosted nearly 65 million visitors in 2024, following 62.2 million in 2023. That makes it the most visited city in the country by a wide margin. According to the International Trade Administration’s National Travel and Tourism Office, New York City was the top city-MSA visited by overseas visitors in 2024, drawing 9,525,000 international arrivals.
NYC has been Tripadvisor’s top U.S. destination for Travelers’ Choice Awards’ “Best of the Best Destinations” for three years running. The appeal is staggering in its range. Conquering New York in one visit is impossible – the must-sees include the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, while neighborhoods like the West Village and the Upper West Side offer a more personal side of city life. The luxury hotel scene has responded robustly, with the Four Seasons New York roaring back in November 2024 after a four-year closure, while the reborn Waldorf Astoria completed its soft opening in spring 2025.
2. Miami, Florida – Sun, Culture, and Record Numbers
Miami was ChatGPT’s second pick, and the city has earned that slot year after year. The second-most visited city in the United States has a whole different energy from NYC. Miami’s lively nightlife and incredible weather drew over 5.1 million international travelers in 2024. The city is known for its Latin and Caribbean influences, which give it a unique flair – whether you want to take in Art Deco architecture in Coconut Grove or dive into Cuban culture in Little Havana, Miami has a lot to offer. It is a city that genuinely delivers on nearly every type of travel expectation.
While big names like New York City and Los Angeles may not surprise on most lists, it is interesting to note that Florida is home to two cities among the country’s most visited – Miami and Orlando. Miami in particular has become a destination that blends nightlife, art, beach culture, and international cuisine in a way few cities can replicate. Miami’s health tech ascent has also contributed to a wave of business travel, bringing an entirely new demographic of visitor to the city. The combination of leisure and business appeal makes it one of the most well-rounded travel destinations in the country.
3. Las Vegas, Nevada – Entertainment Capital with Record Spending
Las Vegas was ChatGPT’s third recommendation, and the entertainment capital of the world continues to deliver staggering economic numbers. In 2024, 41,676,300 people visited Las Vegas, representing a 2.07 percent rise over 2023. More telling than visitor volume is what those visitors actually spend. In 2024, visitor spending climbed to $55.1 billion – 7.0 percent higher than 2023 and nearly 50 percent above the pre-pandemic peak of 2019. Those figures reflect a city operating at a level it has never quite reached before.
Las Vegas was ranked the third-best travel destination in the United States for 2025 by Tripadvisor’s “Best of the Best Destinations” list. It was also named the world’s best city for nightlife in 2025 by Time Out. Beyond the casino floors and concerts, travelers enjoy shopping, fine dining, and visiting nearby natural attractions like Red Rock Canyon. With about 150,300 hotel rooms, Las Vegas maintains the largest hotel inventory in the U.S. – which means even at peak capacity, the city rarely turns visitors away.
4. Washington, D.C. – History, Free Museums, and Record Visitor Spend
ChatGPT flagged Washington, D.C. as a must-visit fourth choice, pointing to its unparalleled concentration of free world-class attractions. The nation’s capital scores exceptionally well for its many free museums, including the National Museum of African American History and Culture and other Smithsonian institutions like the National Air and Space Museum. Few cities anywhere in the world can offer that kind of cultural density without charging entry. It makes D.C. accessible to travelers across all budget levels.
Destination DC announced 27 million visitors in 2024 and $11.4 billion in visitor spend, a record for the city. That record visitor spend number is especially notable, underscoring just how much travelers are investing in the experience. In 2025, the Smithsonian broke ground on the Bezos Learning Center, a $130 million education center funded by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Beyond its exhibitions, the city offers neighborhoods like Brookland, NoMa, Shaw, and the LGBTQ-friendly Logan Circle, as well as newer developments like the $3 billion Wharf project.
5. New Orleans, Louisiana – A Cultural Comeback Story
For the fifth spot, ChatGPT chose New Orleans – and the data from 2024 makes that pick feel particularly well-timed. New Orleans welcomed 19.08 million visitors in 2024, a 6.4 percent increase from 2023’s 17.93 million visitors and near the 19.75 million high point in 2019. Visitors to the city in 2024 spent $10.4 billion, an 8.4 percent increase over 2023 and eclipsing the pre-pandemic high point of $10.045 billion. It is a comeback story that few American cities have managed to replicate at this scale.
Time Out named New Orleans among the “Best Cities in the World to Visit” in 2024, while TripAdvisor crowned it “Best US Food Destination” in its Travelers’ Choice Awards, and Travel + Leisure listed it as one of the “15 Best Places to Travel in August 2024.” New Orleans also ranked third in the nation as a top convention destination, according to a 2024 study, surpassing cities like Chicago and Las Vegas. The city consistently ranks among the top leisure destinations in the United States due to its reputation for food, drink, and music, the preserved French Quarter, and its innate culture of hospitality.
