Los Angeles – A 1956 mid-century modern residence in Brentwood has been restored to highlight its original architectural lines while weaving in natural materials and a calm connection to the outdoors. The project, led by the design-build studio Ome Dezin in collaboration with O’Connor Estates, began with a structure that had suffered years of neglect. Despite the deterioration, the home’s clean forms and potential for light and space drew the team forward. The finished result feels both grounded and open, offering residents a quiet escape within the city.
Respecting History While Updating Function
The original home presented clear structural and mechanical issues that required careful attention. A failing roof, outdated wiring and plumbing, and an inefficient layout demanded updates without erasing the mid-century character. The designers chose to preserve reusable elements such as windows and hardwood flooring wherever possible. This approach maintained the building’s integrity and reduced waste at the same time. Constraints like exposed post-and-beam construction ruled out recessed lighting, so the team turned to flush mounts, pendants, and sconces that complement the architecture instead of competing with it.
Bauhaus Principles Meet Natural Textures
The renovation drew heavily from Bauhaus ideas that emphasize form following function and simple, honest materials. Organic tones of white, greige, and brown form the base palette, while accents of blue, red, and yellow add visual energy without overwhelming the rooms. Brutalist-inspired elements such as terrazzo, cork, and wood bring warmth and authenticity to bathrooms and living areas. These choices create distinct personalities in each space while keeping the overall feeling cohesive and serene. The result balances restraint with moments of color that invite creativity and daily enjoyment.
Blurring Indoor and Outdoor Boundaries
Expansive sliding glass doors and floor-to-ceiling windows already present in the mid-century structure made the indoor-outdoor connection straightforward to enhance. Patios and courtyards were positioned to extend living areas into the landscape, allowing the home to take advantage of Los Angeles’s mild climate year-round. Homeowners can move easily between interior rooms and garden spaces for entertaining or quiet moments. This fluid layout increases both practical use and the sense of retreat without requiring major structural changes.
Personal Touches That Complete the Story
Statement pieces throughout the home reflect the owners’ own experiences rather than following trends. Handcrafted ceramics made by the designers themselves appear in several rooms, adding quiet personality. Vintage or found lighting fixtures serve both practical and aesthetic roles, becoming conversation points without dominating the design. The team notes that every project brings new lessons about flexibility when unexpected challenges arise. Those same obstacles often lead to solutions that feel more natural than the original plan. In this Brentwood residence, simplicity and nature work together to create a space that feels lived-in and restorative.
