The Mediterranean is preparing for an arrival unlike any before. Royal Caribbean’s newest vessel, Legend of the Seas, will begin its first voyage this weekend from the Italian port of Civitavecchia. At roughly 248,660 gross tons and a touch longer than its Icon Class sisters, the ship claims the title of the world’s largest cruise vessel.
A Record-Breaking Vessel Takes Shape
Built at the Meyer Turku yard in Finland, Legend of the Seas joins a series that has steadily pushed size limits. Icon of the Seas and Star of the Seas already surpassed the previous benchmark set by Wonder of the Seas. This latest addition edges ahead by a single foot in length while matching the earlier ships in overall volume.
The scale translates directly to capacity. The vessel accommodates up to 7,600 passengers when fully booked and carries a crew of 2,350. Together these figures allow nearly 10,000 people aboard at peak times, a figure no other cruise ship has reached.
First European Voyage Charts a Mediterranean Route
Unlike its Florida-based predecessors, Legend of the Seas opens its career on the other side of the Atlantic. The maiden sailing departs Civitavecchia and calls at Marseille, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, and La Spezia before returning to Italy. Most Mediterranean itineraries run seven nights and continue through late October.
After the European season the ship crosses to Fort Lauderdale. From there it will alternate six- and eight-night Caribbean voyages that include less-visited ports such as Falmouth, Jamaica, and Willemstad, Curaçao. Every itinerary also stops at Royal Caribbean’s private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas.
Family Focus Shapes Onboard Experience
Designers placed families at the center of the Icon Class concept. Legend of the Seas offers more cabins with extra bunks than earlier Royal Caribbean ships. A dedicated Surfside neighborhood provides splash zones for young children, pools and seating for parents, and nearby family dining and shops.
Seven pools and the largest water park at sea, featuring six slides, further emphasize the family orientation. New dining options include a Hollywood-themed supper club and additional venues inside the AquaDome Market. Evening entertainment features a stage production of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
What Matters Now for Travelers
Initial Mediterranean sailings start at $1,480 per person based on double occupancy. Florida departures begin at $1,582 per person on the same basis. The combination of record size, European debut, and family-centric amenities positions Legend of the Seas as a notable addition to the cruise landscape this summer.
Its arrival signals continued growth in large-scale cruising while offering passengers a fresh way to experience the Mediterranean before the ship heads west.
