Southwest Airlines is preparing major changes to its Rapid Rewards program in 2027 that will alter how travelers qualify for the popular Companion Pass. Under the current system, cardholders can still use large welcome bonuses to reach the 135,000-point threshold needed for the pass. The window to take advantage of this approach closes soon, with applications required by Dec. 2, 2026, to benefit from a special transition rule. ([1])
Why the Companion Pass Remains Valuable
The Companion Pass allows a designated traveler to fly with the primary account holder on most Southwest flights for only taxes and fees, often starting around $5.60 each way. This benefit can be used repeatedly throughout the calendar year once earned. The pass earned under current rules will remain valid through Dec. 31, 2027, even as the airline shifts its loyalty structure.
How Card Bonuses Fit Into Qualification
To earn the pass now, a traveler needs 135,000 Companion Pass qualifying points posted in a single calendar year. Southwest has created a narrow exception for the transition period. Points from welcome bonuses on eligible cards will count toward the 2026 qualification if the cardholder is approved by Dec. 2, 2026, even if the points post after the new year begins. Everyday spending on the card can add further qualifying points. Travelers who already hold some points from flights or partners can close the gap more easily with a single large bonus. Those starting from zero may need to combine offers or pursue additional earning activity before the deadline.
Current Welcome Offers on Southwest Cards
Southwest recently raised the sign-up bonuses across its lineup. The following limited-time offers are available to new applicants who meet the spending requirements within the first three months:
- Southwest Rapid Rewards Priority Credit Card: 90,000 bonus points after $3,000 in spending ($229 annual fee).
- Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card: 85,000 bonus points after $2,000 in spending ($149 annual fee).
- Southwest Rapid Rewards Plus Credit Card: 80,000 bonus points after $1,000 in spending ($99 annual fee).
- Southwest Rapid Rewards Performance Business Credit Card: 80,000 bonus points after $5,000 in spending ($299 annual fee).
- Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Business Credit Card: 60,000 bonus points after $3,000 in spending ($149 annual fee).
These bonuses represent the largest share of the points needed for the pass in many cases. Approval must occur by the Dec. 2 cutoff for the points to qualify under the special rule.
Combining Personal and Business Cards
Chase rules generally prevent holding multiple Southwest personal cards or receiving more than one personal-card bonus within 24 months. Business cards follow separate restrictions tied to the specific product. In some situations, however, a traveler may qualify for one personal card and one business card in the same period, potentially combining bonuses that exceed the 135,000-point mark without relying on prior flying activity. Eligibility depends on an individual’s existing card relationships and Chase’s 5/24 rule. Those who already received a Southwest personal-card bonus earlier in 2026 will not be eligible for another personal offer now. The Dec. 2, 2026, approval deadline is the critical cutoff for anyone hoping to use these bonuses toward a Companion Pass that remains active through the end of 2027.
