You spot a cruise fare that looks almost too good to pass up. Three hundred dollars for a week at sea, all your meals included, a balcony room thrown in for a little extra. Then you get to the final payment page, or worse, the folio slipped under your cabin door on the last night, and the number staring back at you bears almost no resemblance to what you clicked “book” on weeks earlier.
That gap between the advertised price and the real price is not an accident. It is baked into how modern cruise pricing works, and one charge in particular tends to catch first time cruisers off guard more than any other. Here is a closer look at where that money actually goes, and the other fees stacking up right behind it.
The daily gratuity that appears without asking
Almost every mainstream cruise line adds an automatic daily charge to your onboard account, usually labeled a gratuity or a “crew appreciation” fee. Every major mainstream cruise line adds gratuities, also known as a daily service charge, to your onboard account, and it posts automatically each night.[1] Few people even notice they can adjust it at Guest Services, because the charge is designed to blend in with the rest of the bill.
These rates have been climbing steadily. Carnival’s automatic gratuity charge runs $16 to $18 per person, per day, with passengers in most cabins paying $16 and those in suites paying $18[2], though that changed again this year. Carnival raised gratuities effective April 2, 2026, so stateroom guests now pay $17 per day instead of $16, and those in suites pay $19 per day instead of $18.[3] Norwegian sits even higher, with passengers in regular and Club Balcony cabins automatically billed $20 per day, and suite passengers billed $25 per day.[3]
Suite guests pay more, and some lines charge the most in the industry
Not all gratuities are created equal, and the gap between a standard cabin and a suite has widened noticeably. Margaritaville at Sea’s rates increased $2 per person, per day for standard staterooms and $1 per day for suites, making them the highest in the industry at $22 for standard staterooms and $25 for suites.[4] That line also gives guests no flexibility once the charge lands on the bill, since Margaritaville at Sea does not permit guests to adjust or remove gratuities at their discretion.[4]
Holland America made a similar move this year. Starting June 1, guests on Holland America ships pay daily crew appreciation charges of $18 per day for non-suite stateroom guests and $20 per day for suites.[5] Celebrity followed a similar pattern, with standard cabins paying $18.00, Concierge and Aqua Class paying $19.00, and The Retreat suites paying $23.00.[6] The pattern across the industry is consistent: the nicer the room, the bigger the daily tip line item.
Drink packages still carry a hidden service charge on top
Buying a drink package feels like paying once and being done with it, but that is rarely how the math works. An additional service charge or gratuity is added to the total purchase price of a drink package at checkout on most lines.[7] That extra percentage rarely shows up in the marketing image of a frosty cocktail by the pool.
Carnival’s soda package is a small but telling example. Bottomless Bubbles will increase to $11.99 per day, and the 20% mandatory service charge brings the daily rate to over $14.00 per day.[8] On alcoholic packages, the same 18 to 20 percent add on applies, which means the number advertised on the website is almost never the number you actually pay per day.
Specialty dining comes with its own automatic surcharge
Skipping the main dining room for a steak house or sushi counter sounds like a simple upgrade, until the bill arrives with an extra line you didn’t budget for. A specialty restaurant meal comes with a 20% gratuity added at checkout that few travelers anticipate when booking.[9] A modest looking cover charge can grow by a fifth before you’ve even ordered a drink.
The numbers add up quickly across a cruise. A three night specialty dining package priced at $145 becomes $174 after gratuity, and a five night package priced at $271 becomes $325.[9] Fine dining venues push the gap even further, since a mid tier dinner for two at a specialty steakhouse starts around $118 before drinks, and a chef’s table experience for two can start at $302 to $406 once the surcharge is included.[9]
WiFi that costs more than a night at some hotels
Staying connected at sea has never been cheap, and 2026 pricing hasn’t done much to change that. WiFi on Princess starts at $25 per day for one device for the length of the voyage, $30 per day for a single day, and up to $45 to $55 per day for four devices.[10] Multiply that across a week long sailing for two devices and the number rivals a decent hotel room rate on land.
Carnival’s pricing follows a similar shape. Carnival’s Value Wi-Fi Plan starts at $20.40 per day when purchased before the cruise, but jumps to $22.00 per day if bought once onboard.[11] Norwegian charges by stateroom rather than by device, with a Voyage Wi-Fi Pass costing $29.99 per stateroom per day, and a Streaming Voyage Wi-Fi Pass costing $39.99 per stateroom per day.[12] Booking ahead of time is almost always cheaper than waiting to buy it onboard.
Port fees and taxes quietly inflate the “final” price
Advertised cruise fares almost never include the government taxes and port charges tied to each destination on the itinerary. The fare excludes unavoidable taxes and port fees ranging from $110 to $220 per person, on top of daily gratuities that run from $14.50 to $21.[13] These charges are mandatory and non negotiable, since they’re set by the ports and governments the ship visits, not by the cruise line itself.
They still land on the same invoice as everything else, which makes the jump between the headline fare and the checkout total feel bigger than it should. Even a bare bones sailing, one without a drinks package or any booked shore excursions, carries this cost. Stripping everything back to just the fare, gratuities, and port fees, the three charges nobody can avoid, still runs about $1,800 for two on a moderate seven night cruise.[1]
“All inclusive” bundles often hide a mandatory service fee of their own
Package deals that promise free drinks, free WiFi, and free dining sound like the answer to all this fee stacking, but the fine print usually tells a different story. Norwegian’s popular promotion is a good example of this. NCL’s Free at Sea promotion looks generous, with drinks, dining, Wi-Fi, and excursion credits all included, but the included open bar and specialty dining come with a single mandatory service charge, a flat $28.50 per person, per day, which works out to around $399 for two guests on a seven night sailing.[1] That charge lands on the bill before you’ve even boarded.
Holland America’s comparable bundle, Have It All, works the same way on paper. The package brings shore excursion credit, a beverage package, specialty dining, and WiFi together for $65 per person, per day, or $60 per person, per day for cruises departing before Summer 2027.[14] The word “free” attached to any of these perks is doing a lot of quiet work, since the perk itself is bundled into a daily rate you’re still paying regardless of how much you actually use it.
Menu limits and room service cutoffs turn free meals into paid ones
Some of the newest fees aren’t increases at all. They’re restrictions on what used to be unlimited, which functions the same way as a price hike once you actually want that extra course. Norwegian Cruise Line is introducing a $5 fee for any entrée ordered beyond the first two in the main dining room on 2026 sailings.[15] Anyone used to sampling a few dishes at dinner will notice that change fast.
Room service has tightened up in a similar way. Complimentary room service will only run through breakfast hours until 10 a.m. starting in 2026.[15] A late night snack delivered to the cabin, once a harmless perk of cruising, now often comes with a delivery charge attached.
Spa treatments and salon services carry their own automatic tip
Booking a massage or a haircut onboard feels like a personal indulgence separate from the rest of the cruise, but the same service charge logic applies here too. On most lines, an 18 to 20 percent gratuity is tacked onto every spa and salon transaction automatically, the same way it is added to bar tabs and specialty dining. A treatment advertised at a clean, round number rarely stays that way once the charge posts to the folio.
Even lines that fold gratuities into the base fare tend to carve out an exception for the spa. Silversea includes gratuities in the fare for nearly everything, except beauty salon services and spa treatments.[2] It is one of the few places on a “gratuity included” ship where you’ll still see a tip line waiting for you at checkout.
Prepaying helps, but it isn’t a guarantee against every increase
Locking in gratuities and packages before sailing is one of the more reliable ways to dodge a mid cruise rate hike, since most lines apply the price that was in effect when you paid. Prepaying can protect travelers from increases and reduce the final bill, and some lines let guests adjust gratuities onboard, though these charges support crew compensation.[16] That said, prepaying locks in the current rate, not a permanent discount, and lines can and do raise prepaid rates well before your sail date if you haven’t paid yet.
The bigger lesson sitting underneath all of this is less about any single fee and more about how cruise pricing is structured overall. WiFi, gratuities, spa access, and specialty dining are increasingly being excluded from base fares on major lines, and while advertised cruise prices may remain stable, travelers must budget separately for services that were once included in the core fare.[15] The fare gets you in the door. Almost everything else, including the fee nobody warns you about until checkout, gets billed separately.
