United Airlines is making a direct pitch to its two biggest U.S. rivals’ best customers. For a short window, eligible U.S. residents with elite status in Delta SkyMiles or American AAdvantage can apply through October 15, 2026, and approved applicants receive the matching United Premier status for 90 days[1]. The clock is nearly out, so the details matter.

This isn’t a free upgrade to your travel life, and it isn’t a pure giveaway. The matched status comes with a spending test attached. Here’s how the offer works, who can use it, and what to weigh before you apply.

What United Is Actually Offering

The promotion is a temporary status match aimed only at Delta and American elites. United is offering comparable status for 90 days and a path to keep it through January 2028[2]. In effect, it lets frequent flyers try United without starting at the bottom of MileagePlus.

United is pitching it as a Wi-Fi story. The invitation tells travelers not to keep buffering and to switch to United for the fastest Wi-Fi in the sky[3]. That marketing line takes a clear shot at the competition, but the mechanics of the match are what decide whether it’s useful.

The Deadline and Who Can Apply

Time is short. The deadline to apply is October 15 at 11:59 p.m. CT[3]. If you’re reading this in the middle of the week, you have only a few days left.

Eligibility is narrower than the headline suggests. The offer is open to U.S.-based MileagePlus members with earned or lifetime status at Delta or American, and it excludes travelers whose tier came through a trial or promotion[2]. Applicants also need to log into their United MileagePlus account, or create one, and upload proof of their American or Delta status[4].

Which Tiers Match, and to What

The match covers most of the elite ladder. American Gold and Delta Silver Medallion match to United Premier Silver[3]. American Platinum and Delta Gold Medallion match to Premier Gold[3].

At the top, American Platinum Pro and Delta Platinum Medallion match to Premier Platinum[3]. American Executive Platinum and Concierge Key, along with Delta Diamond Medallion and Delta 360, match to Premier 1K[3]. Lifetime tiers are also covered. Delta’s Million Miler variants map to the same United tiers as their base levels[5].

The Spending Requirement

The 90 days is a challenge period, not a permanent grant. To keep the status, you need to hit a spending target in that window. The amounts are $1,500 for Premier Silver, $3,000 for Gold, $4,500 for Platinum and $7,000 for 1K[6].

Not every dollar counts. Only spending on United Airlines and United Express counts toward completing the challenge[5]. One report describes the figures as net of taxes[4], so it’s worth checking exactly how United counts your tickets. If you make the target, the tier extends until January 31, 2028[5].

United already runs a status match for many airlines, so this one is a variation. The usual match’s trial status lasts 120 days, while this one gives only 90[5]. That shorter runway makes planning more important.

The qualification method is different too. This match has no Premier Qualifying Flight requirement, and it uses a cash requirement instead of Premier Qualifying Points[5]. For some travelers, a pure dollar target is easier to plan around than a mix of flights and points.

The Starlink Wi-Fi Backdrop

The campaign sits inside a public dispute over in-flight internet. United has turned the argument over Delta’s rejection of Starlink into a sales pitch[1]. Free Starlink access is tied to MileagePlus membership[7], which gives United another perk to stack alongside status.

The fight has also drawn in a famous name. Elon Musk has been promoting American and United status match offers to unhappy Delta customers[8]. Still, Wi-Fi is only the hook. The underlying target is the premium and corporate spending of customers who fly often and expect to stay connected[2].

It depends on your travel pattern. A match makes the most sense if you already fly routes where United has a strong schedule from your home airport. Hitting $1,500 is a very different task from hitting $7,000 in 90 days, especially around the holidays.

There’s a cost to guessing wrong. One analysis warns that applying without a realistic path to the spending threshold means losing the matched status and possibly the ability to apply again[9]. Treat that as a caution to verify, since it comes from a secondary source. Matching also doesn’t erase your current airline’s benefits, so consider what you’d give up by shifting trips.

Start with United’s official promotion page, because terms can include restrictions that summaries miss. One outlet notes a prior-match restriction, so members who received a recent United status match should check their eligibility[9]. Gather your proof of status first so you can upload it without delay.

Then map out your next three months of travel. Count the trips you’d realistically book on United or United Express and compare the total with your tier’s target. If the numbers line up, applying costs little. If they don’t, you may be better off skipping it.

United’s offer is a real opportunity for Delta and American elites who are open to switching or splitting their loyalty, provided they can meet the spending target in 90 days. The deadline of October 15 at 11:59 p.m. CT leaves little room for second thoughts. Read the official terms, run your own numbers, and decide whether a few months on United is worth the trade.

Status matches are cheap to try only when the math works. Good Wi-Fi is nice, but a tier you can actually keep is better.
