Royal Caribbean is preparing to send its newest Icon Class vessel into the Mediterranean for the first time. Legend of the Seas measures roughly 248,660 gross tons and stretches a foot longer than its two sister ships, giving it the title of the largest cruise ship ever built. The 20-deck vessel will begin its maiden voyage from Civitavecchia, Italy, this weekend and will spend the coming months offering seven-night itineraries across the region.
A New Size Record at Sea
Legend of the Seas joins Icon of the Seas and Star of the Seas in a class that has steadily raised the bar for cruise ship dimensions. Each vessel in the series surpasses the previous record holder, Wonder of the Seas, by about six percent. The slight increase in length on Legend of the Seas is enough to claim the top spot, even if the difference remains modest in practical terms.
Capacity figures underscore the scale. The ship can accommodate up to 7,600 passengers when every berth is filled, along with 2,350 crew members. That combination allows nearly 10,000 people aboard at peak times, a figure no other cruise vessel has matched.
Designed With Families in Mind
Royal Caribbean built the Icon Class ships with multi-generational travel in mind. More cabins include extra bunks than on earlier vessels in the fleet, and the line added dedicated outdoor spaces called Surfside for families with young children. These areas feature splash zones, pools, lounge spots for parents, and nearby dining options tailored to smaller appetites.
Water features stand out as another highlight. Seven pools and the largest water park at sea, complete with six waterslides, give families extensive choices for daytime activities. The design avoids concentrating everything in one area, spreading attractions across multiple decks to reduce crowding.
Mediterranean Debut and Future Plans
The initial sailings will depart from Civitavecchia near Rome and from Barcelona. Ports of call include Marseille in France, Palma de Mallorca in Spain, and La Spezia in Italy. Most trips last seven nights and mark the first time a ship of this size has launched service in European waters.
After repositioning across the Atlantic in late October, Legend of the Seas will base itself at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale. From there it will alternate between six- and eight-night Caribbean itineraries, visiting ports such as Falmouth, Jamaica, and Willemstad, Curaçao that have seen fewer visits from the Icon Class. Every voyage will include a stop at the line’s private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas.
Fresh Entertainment and Dining Options
New venues aboard include a Hollywood-themed supper club and additional dining choices at the AquaDome Market near the top of the ship. Entertainment programming features a stage adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which previously ran on Broadway and in London’s West End.
Initial pricing for the Mediterranean sailings starts at $1,480 per person based on double occupancy. Caribbean departures begin at $1,582 per person on the same basis. These rates reflect the premium placed on the ship’s size and amenities as it enters service.
