There’s a persistent assumption that flying cheap means flying uncomfortable. Cramped knees, no snacks, and a flight attendant who seems permanently annoyed. That stereotype is getting harder to defend in 2026, as a handful of low-cost carriers have quietly built reputations that put some legacy airlines on notice.
These aren’t marketing claims either. Independent ranking bodies, airline review sites, and passenger comfort audits have consistently placed these five carriers well above the budget-airline baseline, sometimes ahead of full-service competitors entirely.
1. JetBlue Airways
JetBlue has spent years blurring the line between budget and premium, and the recognition keeps piling up. JetBlue announced it has once again been recognized by The Points Guy with a TPG Award for Best U.S. Economy Cabin, including for its transatlantic service.[1] That’s not a one-off honor either; this marks the sixth time JetBlue has won the award and its ninth TPG Award since 2018.[1]
The core product explains why. JetBlue’s core experience offers seatback entertainment at every seat, free, fast and unlimited Fly-Fi broadband internet, complimentary brand-name snacks and drinks, and award-winning customer service.[1] The airline has also pushed further upmarket with a new tier, since in 2025, JetBlue launched EvenMore, a reimagined premium economy experience building on its extra-legroom seats with perks such as dedicated overhead bin space, complimentary alcoholic beverages, a premium snack option, early boarding and priority security.[1] Even outside ranking sites, comfort auditors agree, noting that even though the fares and other services are cost-effective, JetBlue is among the most comfortable US-based airlines, so passengers with low budgets don’t automatically have to sacrifice comfort.[2]
2. Southwest Airlines
Southwest has always operated a little differently than typical discount carriers, and its comfort scores reflect that. Reviewers consistently point out that for comfort other than JetBlue, Southwest Airlines is the highest-ranking low-cost carrier, and it’s also among the safest airlines in the US.[3] The physical seat is a big part of that reputation, since Southwest Airlines has a generous average seat width of 17.5 inches and a seat pitch that hovers between 31 and 33 inches.[3]
Connectivity is handled a bit unconventionally but still generously. Wi-Fi on board is free for Rapid Rewards members, and otherwise it costs 8 dollars per device.[3] Broader industry rankings back up the pattern too, with one major comfort survey naming JetBlue Airways, Hawaiian Airlines, American Airlines and Southwest Airlines as leading the pack in terms of in-flight experience, offering free amenities such as Wi-Fi, extra legroom, and complimentary snacks and beverages.[4] For a carrier built on cutting costs, that’s a fairly generous baseline.
3. Breeze Airways
Breeze is younger than the other names on this list, but it was built with comfort in mind from day one. Breeze Airways, founded by JetBlue’s original CEO David Neeleman, launched in 2021 with a clear thesis: fly point-to-point routes between mid-size cities that have historically been underserved by direct service.[5] Rather than fighting for space in crowded hub airports, Breeze focuses on routes like Richmond to Tampa, Providence to New Orleans, or Provo to Phoenix, city pairs where travelers currently face a connecting itinerary or an expensive legacy carrier fare.[5]
That routing strategy has real comfort payoffs onboard too. Breeze’s NiceX cabin offers a 32-inch seat pitch and extra comfort for a modest premium, and the airline has added Airbus A220s to its fleet, a genuinely comfortable aircraft that punches well above budget airline norms.[5] It’s also earned outside recognition, landing at number seven on the 2026 list of the world’s ten best low-cost carriers, according to AirlineRatings.
4. Porter Airlines
Porter has carved out a reputation in North America for treating regional flying like it still matters. The Canadian carrier was named World’s Best Regional Airline, recognizing its strong focus on passenger comfort within its regional market.[6] Little details add up to a surprisingly upscale feel for a discount price point.
Specifically, the airline has differentiated itself by offering complimentary beer and wine served in glassware, free high-speed Wi-Fi on its Embraer E195-E2 fleet, and a no-middle-seat configuration, enhancing comfort on short-haul routes.[6] No middle seat is a small thing that makes a genuinely large difference on a two-hour flight. It’s the kind of detail that legacy carriers charge extra for, if they offer it at all.
5. HK Express
Hong Kong’s HK Express pulled off one of the more notable upsets in recent airline rankings. Rising from number four globally last year to number one in 2026, the achievement reflects HK Express’s commitment not only to safety and operational excellence, but also to elevating the customer experience at every stage of the journey.[7] That’s a significant climb in a single year, and it came without the usual amenities budget flyers expect.
In fact, the airline earned its spot despite skipping some tech-driven perks entirely. Sharon Petersen, CEO of AirlineRatings, noted that despite HK Express not offering Wi-Fi or in-flight entertainment, its consistently excellent cabin service and high-quality onboard menu stood out.[8] Seating hardware helps too, since the airline uses comfortable Recaro SL3710 seating on the majority of its aircraft fleet.[7] On the operational side, the numbers hold up as well, with the carrier having expanded its network across Asia while carrying nearly 8 million passengers in 2025, representing one in every eight travellers at Hong Kong International Airport, and maintaining an annual average on-time performance rate of 84 percent.[7]
These five airlines prove that the old tradeoff between price and comfort isn’t as fixed as it used to be. Seat pitch, cabin service, and even small touches like glassware or a guaranteed aisle or window seat can now show up on a budget ticket just as easily as a full-fare one. The gap hasn’t disappeared entirely, but for travelers paying attention, it’s narrower than it’s ever been.
