Imagine waking up each morning without that familiar knot in your stomach, the one that signals another day of rushing through crowded streets and endless deadlines. While stress has become synonymous with modern urban living, certain European cities have cracked the code to creating environments where their residents actually feel calm and content. Recent comprehensive studies measuring everything from air quality to work-life balance have revealed fascinating insights about where Europeans experience the least daily stress.

These findings come from multiple rigorous research initiatives, including recent Global Emotions Reports and various quality of life indices that surveyed hundreds of thousands of residents across the continent. What emerges is a compelling picture of cities that have prioritized human wellbeing over pure economic growth. So let’s dive in to discover which European destinations have mastered the art of stress-free living.

Vienna retained its title as the world’s least stressed city for expats, marking the third year running the city has been marked as the “world’s most liveable” city according to an annual index compiled by the Economist Intelligence Unit. With almost 50% of the city devoted to green spaces, including the leafy Prater and the Danube Island, approximately 50 per cent of Vienna comprises green spaces, including parks and forested areas. The city also boasts low crime rates, coming third in the 2024 Global Peace Index, with Austria ranking as the fourth most peaceful country in the world.

For the more than two million living within the metropolitan area of Vienna, the city is marked by its affordability, access to healthcare and education, comparably low rents, and green spaces, amongst other factors. “Vienna perfectly combines northern European efficiency and southern European lifestyle, and that involves a high degree of enjoyment”, according to Vienna Tourist Board spokesperson Nikolaus Gräser.

Copenhagen has consistently ranked highly alongside Vienna in recent Economist Intelligence Unit annual rankings, with several European cities, including Vienna, Copenhagen, and Zurich, making up the top three spots. Denmark ranks as the second-happiest country globally, with Nordic countries consistently ranking among the happiest in the world due to their strong social safety nets, emphasis on work-life balance, high levels of trust and social cohesion, and low levels of income inequality.

Copenhagen ranks 4th in Mercer’s 2024 Quality of Living City Ranking, showcasing the city’s comprehensive approach to urban living conditions. The Danish capital’s success stems from its bicycle-friendly infrastructure, extensive public green spaces, and a cultural emphasis on hygge that prioritizes comfort and contentment over constant productivity.

Zurich, Switzerland, takes the top position in the 2024 Quality of Living City Ranking, fueled by its outstanding public services, low crime rates, and a lively cultural scene, all backed by efficient infrastructure and a dedication to sustainability. According to the study, Zurich has clinched the top spot as the best city for expats in 2024, praised for its outstanding public services, low crime rates, and a lively cultural scene.

Additionally, for 2024, Zurich has enhanced its airport connections, increasing the number of flights to and from other continents, with recent enhancements to Zurich Airport improving international connectivity. The Swiss financial hub combines the precision of Swiss efficiency with a surprisingly relaxed approach to daily life, where public transportation runs like clockwork and residents enjoy easy access to both urban amenities and pristine Alpine landscapes.

Luxembourg showcases low-stress levels according to recent international rankings, with Luxembourg (#9) rounding out the list of the happiest countries in Europe. While Monaco reportedly ranks among the least stressed locations according to recent international studies, its upscale, peaceful environment significantly contributes to this stress-free status. Luxembourg follows closely behind in creating similar conditions for its residents.

The Grand Duchy’s compact size works to its advantage, eliminating long commutes that plague larger metropolitan areas. Residents enjoy excellent public services, multilingual environments that reduce communication barriers, and a strong economy that provides financial security without the cutthroat competition found in larger financial centers. The country’s strategic location also allows easy weekend escapes to neighboring countries, providing mental respite when needed.
