Wayan Wardika started Bring Back the Light in 2020 after noticing the steady disappearance of fireflies near his home. The initiative remains the only organized firefly conservation project in Indonesia. His small team of scientists raises the insects in controlled conditions before releasing them into suitable sites. Breeding alone cannot succeed without suitable wild habitat, so the group pairs releases with monitoring of existing populations. Early results show that reintroduced fireflies can survive and reproduce when conditions allow. Working with farmers to reduce chemicals
Wayan has expanded the effort beyond breeding to address root causes on the ground. He now encourages neighboring farmers to switch from chemical pesticides to organic methods. Reduced chemical use improves survival rates for firefly larvae that live in soil and leaf litter. Farmers who adopt the changes report healthier soils and fewer pest outbreaks over time, creating a practical incentive to continue.
