The family shifted focus to a five-day Majestic Mountain Loop that included Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks alongside Yosemite. Bass Lake, 45 minutes south of the park’s south entrance, became the new base and produced a smoother, less crowded experience than a valley stay would have allowed.
Base Camp at Bass Lake
Miller’s Landing Resort offered cabins with full kitchenettes, open living areas, and decks overlooking the water. The location placed the group 45 minutes from Yosemite’s south entrance via Highway 41 and roughly 90 minutes from the valley floor. After long hiking days, the family returned to swim in the lake, sit on the deck, and avoid valley traffic. The water proved refreshingly cool rather than icy, and nearby Oakhurst supplied groceries, fuel, and meals at spots such as South Gate Brewing Co.
Local trails added variety without extra driving. The one-mile Way of the Mono Trail provided easy walking and interpretive panels about the region’s original inhabitants. Evening options included dinner at The Forks Resort with lake views. The setup kept the pace relaxed while still allowing full days inside the park.
Mist Trail to Nevada Falls
The group left before sunrise and reached the trailhead with few other hikers present. The 5.4-mile round trip to Nevada Falls gained about 2,000 feet and passed Vernal Falls along the way. Wet granite steps beside the rushing water demanded steady footing and appropriate footwear. The family paused at the top of Vernal Falls for snacks and views before continuing up switchbacks to Nevada Falls.
Descent brought a different highlight. Sunlight through the mist created multiple rainbows across the 350 steps leading down from Vernal Falls. The same route that felt steep on the way up turned into a highlight on the return. The teenager later listed those rainbow stairs among the trip’s top memories.
Moonlight Train Through the Forest
The Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad Moonlight Special provided an evening activity that exceeded expectations. Guests arrived early for dinner and a look at the Thornberry Museum before boarding a narrow-gauge steam train. The three-hour ride moved through the Sierra Nevada at dusk, with the conductor sharing stories of the area’s logging history.
The train stopped in Lewis Creek Canyon for a campfire session. The Sugar Pine Singers performed music spanning several eras, and the crowd joined in singing. The teenager, initially unsure what to expect, ended up participating fully and later named the evening one of her favorites. Jackets proved essential once the train moved through the cooling forest air.
Practical Planning Details
Several choices shaped the trip’s success. The south entrance via Highway 41 proved faster than the Arch Rock entrance during summer months. An America the Beautiful Pass covered entry fees across the three parks visited. Early starts on the Mist Trail kept crowds low until the descent.
Additional stops in Oakhurst included breakfast at Bee’s Bakery Cafe and an unplanned session at Yosemite Axe Throwing. Thrift-store shoes purchased next door met the closed-toe requirement. A lunch at Idle Hour Winery and Kitchen offered Mediterranean dishes and local wine. These elements filled non-hiking time without adding pressure.
Looking Ahead
The teenager returned home with improved photography skills after using a DSLR throughout the trip. She also carried new memories of lake swims, axe throwing, and the unexpected train ride. The Half Dome goal remains on a future list, yet the alternative itinerary delivered its own lasting rewards. The seven-year-old who once needed carrying on trails now led the way on switchbacks above Vernal Falls.
