We Asked 8 Hotel Concierges to Name the Most Underrated Travel Experiences – These Made the List

There is something almost magical about the moment a hotel concierge leans across the desk and says, in a low conspiratorial voice, “Forget the guidebook. Here’s where you actually want to go.” These are the people who have watched thousands of guests return from the Eiffel Tower looking mildly disappointed. They know where the real memories are made. And right now, in 2026, that knowledge is more valuable than ever.

Three out of four travelers now express concerns about overtourism, and the travel industry is being forced to reckon with it. A Booking.com 2024 survey found that roughly two thirds of travelers would rather discover a place their friends have never heard of than revisit a famous one. The world’s most interesting travel experiences are hiding in plain sight. So here’s what the concierges actually told us.

1. Ljubljana, Slovenia – Europe’s Secret Capital

Honestly, if you haven’t heard of Ljubljana yet, that’s almost the point. For a taste of European charm without the crowds, Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, deserves a spot on your must-visit list, where you can roam the storied streets of the Old Town or take in the scenes on a city cruise. It has the charm of Prague from fifteen years ago, before the stag parties arrived and ruined everything.

History lovers can venture up on the funicular to Ljubljana Castle, dating back nearly 1,000 years, while the city also serves as a great base for day trips to scenic Lake Bled, the otherworldly caverns of Postojna Cave Park, and Nova Gorica, the 2025 European Capital of Culture. The numbers back up the buzz, too. According to data from the Statistical Office of Slovenia and Ljubljana Tourism, the city recorded over 2.5 million overnight stays and more than 1.27 million arrivals in 2024, marking growth rates of nearly 13% in overnight stays and nearly 15% in arrivals compared to 2023.

Slovenian tourism reached remarkable milestones in 2024, outperforming European and global averages, with a 7.5% increase in international arrivals as Slovenia strengthened its position as a leading green hospitality destination. Yet it still feels wonderfully unhurried. That contrast, between growing recognition and preserved calm, is exactly why hotel concierges keep sending their guests there.

2. Slow River Journeys Through the Brazilian Amazon

The Amazon gets mentioned constantly in travel circles, but most people picture crowded riverboat tours with loudspeaker commentary blasting over the jungle. Let’s be real. That is not what the concierges are recommending. Along the Rio Negro, small expedition vessels are now opening more thoughtful, community-minded ways to explore the Brazilian Amazon.

Smaller boats carrying only around 20 to 25 people have the ability to access tributaries that allow for a truly personal experience of the place, and because you have a bespoke schedule, you can meet more remote communities that you simply wouldn’t encounter on a traditional, stock itinerary – communities that often don’t want to engage with massive groups. There is a profoundly different quality of stillness on those smaller vessels. Mornings that belong entirely to you and the river.

The best operators focus on the regenerative side of travel, asking how the experience is supporting the local community, with smaller boats working alongside communities and offering a far more thoughtful and sustainable approach. For travelers who actually want to connect rather than observe, this is the experience. It’s hard to say for sure whether it will stay this uncrowded, but for now, it remains genuinely extraordinary.

3. Albania – The Fastest-Growing Gem You’re Still Ignoring

Albania has a reputation problem. Or rather, it doesn’t have a reputation at all outside of a certain travel-obsessed niche. It was actually the world’s fastest-growing tourism destination between 2019 and 2024, with visitor numbers rising by over 100%. Yet compared to neighboring Croatia, Greece, or Italy, it still feels gloriously undervisited.

Albania offers stunning coastal towns and mountain villages without the crowds, which is a combination that feels almost extinct in the Mediterranean. Albania is also home to the Vjosa Wild River National Park, a new protected area around one of Europe’s last truly wild rivers, poised to become a major ecotourism destination. Think of it as what Croatia was in the early 2000s, but with cheaper food and almost no queues.

Finding underrated gems isn’t always about the country you choose, but the region within it. Within the same country, staggeringly underexplored areas are often found right beside some of the most overtouristed ones. Albania is the rare case where the whole country still fits that description. Every hotel concierge who mentioned it said the same thing: go now, before that changes.

4. Mongolia – Wide Open, Wildly Misunderstood

Mongolia. People hear the name and immediately think of remote, complicated, expensive. They’re wrong on at least two of those counts. Known for its traditional gers, friendly nomadic people, and herds of wild horses crossing untouched steppes, Mongolia has to be experienced to be believed – and with a new international airport and affordable local-led tours, this seemingly far-flung country is more accessible than you’d expect.

A perfect introduction involves spending a couple of days in the capital Ulaanbaatar – surprisingly easy to navigate – then taking in the mountain ranges and fresh air of Gorkhi Terelj National Park. It’s the kind of scale that resets something in your brain. Wide valleys, near-total silence, and a sense of space that most people in 2026 have simply never experienced.

The concierges who recommended Mongolia were consistent on one point: the cultural encounter is what makes it. Staying the night under the stars in a ger can mean nomadic herders stopping by to welcome you, which is the sort of thing no five-star hotel can manufacture at any price. It’s raw, surprising, and quietly unforgettable.

5. Vis Island, Croatia – Deliberately Off the Map

Croatia is not underrated. But Vis? That’s a different conversation entirely. The remote island has managed to stay relatively under the radar primarily because of its location – approximately 45 to 60 kilometres off the Croatian mainland, it is one of the farthest inhabited islands in the Adriatic Sea and only accessible by boat.

Vis also served as a Yugoslav military base, which kept it off-limits to the public until 1989. Since it began welcoming visitors, the island has retained a small-scale and intimate approach to tourism, ensuring it preserves its authenticity. That history shaped an island culture that never had to bend itself to mass tourism. The tavernas serve what they want to serve. The locals largely live as they always have.

Despite being only 90 square kilometres in size, there’s plenty to keep you occupied. Concierges love Vis precisely because it offers everything Croatia promises but rarely delivers at peak season: calm water, honest food, genuinely empty coves in July. It’s like being let in on a secret that somehow hasn’t leaked yet.

6. Oulu, Finland – The European Capital of Culture Nobody’s Talking About

Here’s the thing about Oulu: it’s sitting right there in northern Finland, genuinely world-class in its cultural ambition, and almost nobody outside Scandinavia knows it exists. Sitting where the Oulujoki River meets the Bay of Bothnia, Oulu is all culture and no crowds – and has just been named the European Capital of Culture 2026 for its forward-thinking stance on everything from climate science to creative expression.

While it sits on the fringes of the Arctic Circle, Oulu is one of Europe’s hottest destinations right now – with museums, art galleries, music festivals, and fine-dining restaurants all in the mix. It’s an unusual combination: serious intellectual energy paired with Arctic wilderness on the doorstep. Concierges who have sent guests there report back almost universal astonishment.

Trips to cold locations – what the travel industry is calling “coolcations” – are gaining serious momentum, with flight searches for cold travel destinations like Svalbard and Kyrgyzstan skyrocketing over the past decade. Oulu fits perfectly into this rising trend. It rewards the curious traveler with exactly the kind of experience that’s becoming increasingly rare: genuine discovery in a European city that hasn’t been flattened by tourism yet.

7. Jeju Island, South Korea – Asia’s Best-Kept Non-Secret

For people looking for an Asian destination that has something for every type of traveler, Jeju Island in South Korea delivers: big-city happenings, cultural experiences, beautiful beaches and resorts, picturesque waterfalls, hiking, and scuba diving opportunities. Think of it as Hawaii but without the price tag, the crowds, or the fourteen-hour flight from Europe.

It really is a place where you can spend a day relaxing in nature and then live it up in the city by night. Around Seogwipo, you can trek to the lone Oedolgae Rock formation jutting from the ocean, snorkel along the Hwanguji Coast, visit Yakcheonsa Temple – one of the largest in Asia – and eat traditional Korean food and Jeju specialties. The food scene alone is worth the ticket price, honestly.

The reason Jeju keeps showing up in concierge recommendations is precisely its range. It doesn’t ask you to commit to being one type of traveler. A Skift survey found that roughly half of travelers now prioritize authentic experiences over traditional sightseeing, favoring activities like home-cooked meals with locals, artisan workshops, and participation in local festivals – and Jeju delivers all of those, alongside genuinely dramatic volcanic scenery. It’s a rare combination that most destinations can only promise.

8. Uganda – The African Safari Most Travelers Have Never Considered

While most safari-seekers flock to Kenya, South Africa, or Tanzania, almost no one visits Uganda comparatively – yet Uganda is less expensive, its national parks are under-visited but amazing, and you can do gorilla trekking in environments that feel entirely your own. It sounds almost too good to be true. It isn’t.

At Kidepo National Park, visitors can hear lions roaring at night and see cheetahs, giraffes, elephants, and buffalos. Kidepo gets far fewer visitors than Uganda’s other national parks, giving you a more up-close, authentic experience. The contrast with a crowded Masai Mara vehicle convoy is almost impossible to overstate. In Kidepo, you might share the horizon with no one.

Mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or Mgahinga National Park in southwestern Uganda remains one of the most profound wildlife encounters on earth. Sixty-five percent of travelers now value international travel over material possessions – ranking it higher than buying a new smartphone, a new car, expensive jewelry, or even a second home. Uganda is exactly the kind of experience that justifies that kind of investment. The concierges who recommended it tend to get a little emotional about it. That tells you something.

The Bigger Picture: Why the Hidden Gems Are Where the Magic Lives

In a 2024 survey on the impact of overtourism on travel plans in Europe, over a quarter of respondents intended to avoid visiting overcrowded destinations in the year ahead. That number tells a clear story about where tourism is heading. Three-quarters of surveyed travelers worry about overtourism, while nearly a third have personally experienced it, and more than half report plans to avoid overpopulated hotspots.

The biggest reason to choose lesser-known places is that they let you slow down and actually enjoy your trip. When you’re not rushing to check off the same itinerary as everyone else, you experience places differently – you have more authentic interactions, discover unique local spots, and support small businesses. That’s not a travel trend. That’s a fundamental shift in what people want from the time and money they invest in going somewhere.

What makes these places special isn’t just their scenery or history. It’s the chance to experience something authentic, away from the usual tourist spots. The concierges we spoke to were unanimous on one thing: the best trips are rarely the most obvious ones. The next time one of them leans across the desk and drops their voice, pay very close attention. What do you think – is it time to finally book the one that’s been sitting quietly on your list?
