In 2024, national parks welcomed over 325 million recreation visits, representing a 4% increase from the previous year. Meanwhile, the U.S. is home to more than 6,600 state park sites which protect over 14 million acres of diverse landscapes. These hidden gems offer the same spectacular views, adventurous trails, and wildlife encounters without the parking battles or elbow-to-elbow crowds.
Palo Duro Canyon State Park, Texas – The Second Grand Canyon
Only 30 minutes from Amarillo, Palo Duro State Park is the second-largest canyon in the U.S. Like the Grand Canyon, Palo Duro has layers of red, orange, and lavender-hued rock walls as well as rock hoodoos. With elevation unusual to Texas, the whole scene feels like you’re in Utah or Arizona – until longhorn cattle amble by your hike or horseback ride. The Texas Panhandle is never crowded, making reservations easy for camping on the canyon’s floor, rim, or in one of the park’s stone cabins. Palo Duro Canyon State Park is referred to by TPWD as the “Grand Canyon of Texas.” The park maintains relatively low visitor numbers compared to major national parks.
Custer State Park, South Dakota – Wildlife and Hidden Lakes
Many visitors come to Custer State Park – covering over 70,000 acres in South Dakota’s Black Hills – to swim, paddle boat, fish, or simply admire the view of the incredibly picturesque Lake Sylvan. Custer State Park: This is a phenomenal hidden gem park with wonderful lakes and spires hikes. The park offers incredible opportunities for spotting buffalo herds roaming freely across the prairies, creating a truly authentic American West experience. With over 70,000 acres to explore, visitors rarely encounter the crushing crowds that plague more famous destinations, making it perfect for those seeking solitude in nature’s grandeur.
Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park, Florida – Dark Sky Sanctuary
Gaze at the stars with skies so dark that this park attracts astronomers from across the state. By day, Kissimmee Prairie Preserve offers vast prairie space full of birds and wildflowers. What’s most special, however, is that this is one of the few places in South Florida far enough from city lights to experience the dark skies necessary to see the twinkling Milky Way. The park closes at sunset, however, so only campers (or state park passholders who make advance arrangements for an after-hours pass) can stick around and see the stars. During the day, visitors to this park and its 54,000 acres of open prairie, can be rewarded with sightings of birds (Crested Carcara and the rare and endangered Florida grasshopper sparrow). We’ve limited ourselves to parks with among the lowest visitor counts – under 150 visitors a day. (Some of these parks average fewer than 50 visitors a day.)
Fall Creek Falls State Park, Tennessee – Waterfalls and Forest Serenity
A Tennessee state park is being named one of the top “hidden gem” destinations to visit this summer. Fall Creek Falls in Van Buren County ranked as the ninth most searched for hidden gem, according to the study. Data shows that the state park gained over 78,600 average monthly searches on Google. “The beautiful waterfalls are some of the highest in the East of America and are surrounded by over 26,000 acres of nature,” wrote the study. The park features a stunning 256-foot waterfall that cascades into a deep gorge, surrounded by miles of hiking trails that wind through lush Tennessee forests. Despite its incredible natural features, it remains refreshingly uncrowded compared to national park alternatives.
