Florida gets all the attention when the conversation turns to tax-friendly retirement, and for good reason. Still, it’s far from the only state that lets retirees keep more of their Social Security checks, pension payments, and investment withdrawals. A handful of other states match or even beat Florida when you add up income tax, property tax, sales tax, and estate planning considerations.

Choosing where to spend your retirement years shouldn’t hinge on taxes alone, but the financial difference between states can be substantial over a 20 or 30 year retirement. Below are five states that consistently rank among the most tax-friendly options for retirees in 2026, each with its own personality and trade-offs worth understanding before you pack the moving truck.

1. Wyoming

Wyoming rarely gets the spotlight, yet tax analysts keep placing it at or near the very top of retirement rankings. Wyoming, South Dakota, and Florida lead when retirement tax friendliness is scored across all dimensions: income tax, Social Security taxation, pension taxation, sales tax, and property tax. That means Social Security benefits, pension income, and IRA or 401(k) withdrawals all pass through untouched by state taxes.

The advantages don’t stop at income. Wyoming has no income tax, no estate tax, and relatively low combined sales taxes averaging under 6%. On top of that, property taxes are also below the national average, and Wyoming is one of the most comprehensively tax-friendly states for retirees. For retirees who prioritize wide open spaces and mountain scenery over big-city amenities, Wyoming quietly delivers one of the best overall tax pictures in the country.

2. South Dakota

South Dakota shares the top tier with Wyoming, and it has become something of a magnet for retirees with sizable investment portfolios. South Dakota offers no income tax, trust-friendly laws, and is popular for retirees with investment portfolios. There’s no tax on pensions, Social Security, dividends, or capital gains, which makes financial planning refreshingly simple.

Everyday costs stay reasonable too. The Mount Rushmore State is one of a handful of states with no income tax, a benefit that is particularly beneficial for retirees, and it also has no inheritance or estate tax and a relatively low combined average state and local sales tax rate of 6.11%. Homeowners should note that relatively low property values mean a lower median property tax bill, but its effective property tax rate of 1.02% is on the higher end, so anyone eyeing a higher-value property should factor that into the budget.

3. Tennessee

Tennessee has built a reputation as one of the most retiree-friendly states in the South, and the tax structure backs that up. Tennessee’s tax structure is among the most retiree-friendly in the country, with no state income tax, so Social Security benefits and retirement income remain untouched, and low property taxes help stretch savings further. Add in a lower overall cost of living, and it’s easy to see the appeal for retirees on a fixed income.

The one catch is at the cash register. The Volunteer State has no state income tax, no estate or inheritance tax, and one of the lowest median property tax bills and property tax rates in the country, but you may end up paying more on sales tax. In fact, Tennessee charges a 7% state sales tax, with local sales tax adding another 2.75%, pushing the average Tennessean’s sales tax burden to 9.61%, the second-highest rate behind only Louisiana. For retirees who spend modestly on taxable goods, the trade-off still tilts heavily in Tennessee’s favor.

4. Nevada

Nevada offers a lifestyle very different from the quiet plains of Wyoming or South Dakota, but the tax benefits are cut from the same cloth. Nevada offers no income tax and no estate or inheritance tax, though the state does have a relatively high combined sales tax rate, averaging around 8.2% when local taxes are included, while property taxes are moderate compared to national averages. That combination means retirees living off Social Security, pensions, or retirement account withdrawals pay zero state tax on that income no matter how large the nest egg.

Nevada’s appeal also comes down to lifestyle diversity, from the entertainment and dining scene in Las Vegas and Reno to quieter desert and mountain communities elsewhere in the state. Retirees who want access to major airports, world-class healthcare systems, and a warm climate without state income tax often find Nevada checks more boxes than expected. The moderate property tax environment is a nice bonus for those who plan to own rather than rent during retirement.

5. Delaware

Delaware doesn’t have the no-income-tax bragging rights of the previous four states, but it makes up for it with a unique mix of benefits that few states can match. Delaware is one of the most tax friendly states for retirees since it does not tax Social Security benefits and offers property tax breaks to seniors, and it’s also one of only five states without a sales tax, along with Alaska, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon, with no tax on inheritances and estates either. That absence of sales tax is a rare feature among retirement-friendly states.

Delaware also rewards older residents directly through its tax code. Delaware is consistently ranked as one of the most tax-friendly states for retirees thanks to no state or local sales tax, tax exemptions that allow residents over 60 to exclude up to $12,500 of investment and qualified pension income including out-of-state government pensions, and no estate or inheritance taxes. Combine that with a mild four-season climate and easy access to major East Coast cities, and Delaware becomes a compelling, if often overlooked, alternative to the Sunshine State.

None of these five states will suit every retiree, and taxes are only one piece of the retirement puzzle. Healthcare access, climate, proximity to family, and overall cost of living deserve just as much weight as any tax bracket or exemption. Still, for retirees focused on stretching Social Security checks and pension income as far as possible, Wyoming, South Dakota, Tennessee, Nevada, and Delaware all offer a genuine alternative to the well-worn path to Florida, each with its own blend of financial advantages and everyday charm.
